NY "Ground Zero" Memorial - Liberals in Charge!
Today's Wall Street Journal "Letters" section has a very disturbing column written by Debra Burlingame, sister of Charles F. "Chic" Burlingame III, pilot of American Airlines fight 77, which was crashed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Ms. Burlingame is also a member of the board of directors of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. Ms. Burlingame writes the principal tenant (300,000 sq.ft.), International Freedom Center (IFC) has a memorial theme, not so much about 9/11 but about human rights failures, but featuring Native American abuse, the Jim Crow South, Chinese dissindents, Chilean refugees, the Third Reich and so on. Following is a list of the predominant players of the socialist left:
- Tom Bernstein, activist lawyer, and member of Human Rights First. joined by the American Civil Liberties Union, that filed a lawsuit three months ago against Donald Rumsfeld on behalf of detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- Michael Posner, executive director at Human Rights First who is leading the world-wide "Stop Torture Now" campaign focused entirely on the U.S. military. He has stated that Mr. Rumsfeld's refusal to resign in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal is "irresponsible and dishonorable."
- Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, who is pushing IFC organizers for exhibits that showcase how civil liberties in this country have been curtailed since September 11.
- Eric Foner, radical-left history professor at Columbia University who, even as the bodies were being pulled out of a smoldering Ground Zero, wrote, "I'm not sure which is more frightening: the horror that engulfed New York City or the apocalyptic rhetoric emanating daily from the White House." This is the same man who participated in a "teach-in" at Columbia to protest the Iraq war, during which a colleague exhorted students with, "The only true heroes are those who find ways to defeat the U.S. military," and called for "a million Mogadishus."
- George Soros, billionaire founder of Open Society Institute, the nonprofit foundation that helps fund Human Rights First and is an early contributor to the IFC. Mr. Soros has stated that the pictures of Abu Ghraib "hit us the same way as the terrorist attack itself."

International Freedom Center, for people who want freedom without sacrifice or wars
There is no such thing.
The funny thing about liberals, and their whole "anti-war" crap... is if it wasn't for those of us who faught in wars, the odds are any 'liberal' speaking out would find some Dictators Secret Police putting two into the back of their head.

If this goes up, me thinks its about time for a million man molotav march. Reason just don't seem to be a part of these people's nature
I found the remark about the USS ARIZONA very interesting. I was at the ARIZONA memorial when I was in the Navy--and a few of us went to see the ship.
The moron Park Ranger that was there went through the usual 'canned' statistics (showing, I might add, little realization for the 1177 men that died on that ONE ship!)
What was the real kicker was that he proceeded to give JAPAN's side of the story. I stopped him in mid-sentence and let him know that he has some real balls doing this over those poor sailor's grave. I also told him that the Japanese point of view was a non-issue, period.
How typical of the park service to show no respect for the dead----and It frightens me that they might be running the memorial at the WTC.
They will probably end up saying we deserved the attacks.
The WTC Memorial, set to open in 2010, will have movies depicting the "Point of View" of the radical left. The memorial won't necessarily need a live spokesperson, it will be on film at the push of a button. How pathetic, how convenient.
Children, children. Put your toys away, take a little nap, then breathe deeply and we can work through this.
The 9/11 memorial has 50,000 sq ft allocated to it - that's more than one acre in lower Manhattan. By no stretch of anybody's imagination should this be considered "meager."
Don't we want to show our children why 9/11 is important? A discussion of freedom (not, like Don says, an analysis of human rights failures) is absolutely the most appropriate topic in this context.
Don has cherry-picked the names of a few liberals out of a list of more than one hundred names associated with the project. Shame on you, Don.
9/11 happened to all of us - not just angry Republican wingnuts who hate liberals.
All of you need to grow up.
A typical liberal response, full of insults while missing any intellectual thought or pertinent articulation.
I don't cherry pick names sir/madam, the names were provided by a board member of the memorial committee and sister of the pilot whose plane was flown into the Pentagon on 9/11, Ms. Burlingame.
Further, I am quite grown up, quite educated and I deal in material facts. You see, intellectual thought does not reside soley on the left.
"Wingnuts", something associated with engineering and a mechanical device, not a human being. Simply innuendo and more insults without forethought, persumed by someone without adequate thought processes.
Yes, the memorial is about 9/11, not dedicated to human rights failures, not beating a drum on history, but a remembrance of the horror of terrorism, and in particular, 9/11.
The only thing this memorial should represent is the tragedy of 9/11 not someone elses agenda, unrelated to this site and that day.
don. I don't share all of your politics, but I do enjoy your weary amused viewpoint on the absurd side of world affairs.

PS And I agree about avoiding personal/verbal abuse in blogland.
Thank You...This Conservative aims to please!
A typical liberal response, full of insults while missing any intellectual thought or pertinent articulation.
Besides the irony using "liberal" as if its an insult, and painting with quite a broad brush, this statement resides on the same page as the name Hillary Clinton with a hammer and sickle instead of a 'C'. And this is shortly followed by embattled pleas to stop the insults! Oh the irony!
No one said the word "Liberal" was an insult until you did. Must be some inner guilt feeling filled with low self-esteem.
No where in the dictionary is the word liberal defined by "insult."
Once again it comes down to feeling insult when one see a conservative use the word Liberal.
I pointed out the author that initiated my response was named "Liberal Avenger." But avenging what? Back to the self-esteem problem.
In the mid-20's and well into FDR's failed presidency the word progressive was used to describe Democrats and now today's Democrats, many of whom are liberal, were admitted "Socialists." In a free market society as found in the U.S. I would say that is an insult.
It's been my experience and observation (I'm a former Liberal) that Liberals are totally in favor or free speech, free press, and differences of opinion, as long as they don't go against the Liberal agenda.
Misguided, but some Liberals like me can eventually wake up. But I was never anti-American. And a lot of these people are. Reading about this anti-American WTC crap just makes me sick. I mean physically sick.
-A very concerned citizen.
