Go Get Em!

Professional athletes who try to pad their million-dollar paychecks with paid autograph signings won't be welcome in Rhode Island under a bill approved by a Senate committee. Senator Roger Badeau introduced the measure. He says he's fed up with athletes charging upwards of 100 dollars for an autograph at large-scale autograph signing events. Badeau's bill would ban professional athletes, entertainers or promoters from charging a fee for an autograph to a child under age 16. They would be fined 100 dollars for each violation. The Democrat says he got the idea after seeing Red Sox players getting paid for autographs at an event in Providence after their World Series victory. I suppose the bill for all those steroids is taxing these "poor" athletes. Some revealing numbers. Tiger Woods charges $750.00. Michael Jordan $1,000. The claim that children seeking autographs sell them on eBay. In some cases this is probably true, for the adults. However, this is simply exploiting children to pad the bank accounts of these egocentric prima donnas.

Meeting of the Mindless

A recent rally by MoveOn.org brought attendance from the sleazy left. Who else would attend? The idea for this rally came from Senator Robert Byrd (D-WVA). Mr. Byrd trained in rallies while a member of the KKK and is an expert in filibusters. A list of attendees also included Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and fellow Democratic senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Edward Kennedy, Charles Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Patrick Leahy, and Richard Durbin. What a lovely group! Similar to a training session for al Qaeda.

No Officer...No Gentleman!

Richard Gere, actor, political activist and Hollywood hack is also the Chairman for the International Campaign for Tibet and founder of the House of Tibet New York. Mr. Gere promotes non-violent action to resolve the issue of Tibet as well as speaking out against the Bush Administration for involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Gere believes mass graves; torture and subversion of a people can only be corrected by non-violent means. To his credit, Mr. Gere is calling on the European Union to maintain the current arms embargo on China. To his discredit, Mr. Gere lives in the Utopian world of denial. Sanctions only allow governments to become more creative finding methods to "beat the system" while only its people suffer. Close observation of North Korea is an example Mr. Gere avoids to discuss. "Maintaining the embargo provides strong leverage in encouraging progress toward a resolution of the status of Tibet and toward sustaining stability elsewhere. The key to Tibet's self-determination lies in China's transformation. In supporting Tibet, we need to consider the changes that are happening in China today -- its increasing sophistication and influence on the world stage and the desire of the Chinese people for progress," states Gere. Mr. Gere brings to our attention decades of stalemate in freeing Tibet. Yes, decades of suppression of an entire population. Where have "discussions" led? Is Tibet any more free? Violence is not the only means to freeing societies but inaction for decades is torture in itself. We should remember the Paris peace talks during the Vietnam War where years of discussion took place over the shape of the conference table and seating arrangements. Mr. Gere lives in the liberal world of idealism and fiction. Mr. Gere, torture and mass graves are reality, not something found on celluloid.

Linda, the criticism is valid and warranted. Your media is preying on a private issue, replaying tape of a lady in bed, unable to communicate ad nausea. This is no more than a media circus and has done nothing but further corrupt the news. In fact, this isn't news anymore, its tabloid sensationalism.

John Edwards....Remember Him?

Well Mr. Edwards, not all Americans are scheming trial lawyers, preying on emotions of everyday citizens in the jury pool. Very few Americans win huge awards in court and keep the bulk of the money. Trial lawyers like Edwards live in that America, someplace under a wet and slimy rock counting their cash.

Jesse Jackson's Ulterior Motive

Jesse Jackson has done little in his career that would not bring attention to himself. The Terri Schiavo case is one in hundreds of examples where Mr. Jackson shows up for a "cause" which is too little too late. After days and weeks of wrangling Jackson arrives on the scene at the midnight hour to complain for a cause other than Terri Schiavio. Jackson is an opportunist and is simply using this circus to further his cause, which is Jesse Jackson. "I implore them to apply this same passion for Terri Schiavo to the young infants and children dying of starvation and lack of prenatal and postnatal care," Jackson said in a statement released by the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, his Chicago-based group. "Those on food stamps need a feeding tube to fend off poverty." It should be noted that Rainbow/PUSH Coalition was Jackson's feeding tube throughout his career until he bankrupted it. When the PUSH patient began to recover Jackson returned as its "leader" after his hiatus from the organization for many years of financial difficulties. Jackson has an agenda and it's not Terri Schiavo, but his inability to refrain from the TV cameras and press corp. Opportunity was knocking and zealot Jackson could no longer resist.

It's Knight Time!

As a graduate of Indiana University and follower of legendary coach Bob Knight I'm delighted to see Texas Tech still in the NCAA basketball tournament. There is some praise for the successful coach but it's easier to find pictures of the Coach scowling, frowning, growling. And references to him as a "Pit Bull." Seldom do we see an article praising Coach Knight for his accomplishments as a teacher, a disciplinarian and his high standards for honesty. It's too easy for the sportswriting hacks to criticize the coach who won Olympic gold with amateurs. In a week where a young boy opens fire in a school killing classmates, in a society of hip-hop, large egos, baggy basketball uniforms and the "look at me" crowd it's nice to see a basketball team without jersey names, no "Number 1" and students who are clean cut and scheduled to graduate from college. A team who praises their coach while sportwriters and pundits remain critical. Indiana University isn't in the "Big Tournament", their team sitting in ruins and banners of previous championships relegated to the rear of the basketball arena dressed in cream and crimson. Coach Knight is coaching from the quiet corner of Lubbock Texas, away from the glitter, out from under the microscope. Texas Tech basketball is someplace it has never been, with players no program recruited and student athletes who will graduate from college. It's about time the record is set straight.

Bob Knight is his own man, one who represents high principles, expectations and demands for his players, his coaching staff and, most of all, himself. But he is foremost an educator. His ability to teach young men the game of basketball and the game of life is one of his most noted characteristics.

Coach Knight has proven over and over again that he is the finest basketball coach in America. No other coach can cite NCAA and NIT championships and Olympic and Pan American gold medals among his achievements. There are only two coaches in the history of collegiate basketball who have won more than the three national championships Knight has won during his career. His coaching achievements were honored in May of 1991 when he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Coach Knight continues to achieve and young men are grateful and better off for it.

Democrats Just Don't Get It

Indiana Senate Bill 483 could be voted on Monday by the House Elections and Apportionment Committee. The law would make Indiana the only state requiring voters to show a photo ID, with no other forms of identification allowed. Republicans have said the law would help fight vote fraud and maintain integrity at the polls. But Democrats have said the law would make voting difficult for low-income and elderly people who don't have state or federal IDs or driver's licenses. The bill also would offer free state-issued photo IDs to those who can't afford the $9 charge. The state would also have to mail out notices alerting citizens to the requirement. Of course the Dem's don't offer a solution at the state level, very similar to their Washington D.C. counterparts in Congress. Whine and complain but never offering any methods to improve failed systems is the Democrats mantra. I suppose getting a photo ID for the many deceased voters on Democratic rolls poses a dilemma for liberals. Source: UPI

Failing to Take Responsibility

I Don't Think So!

The FEC is being asked to censor another segment of society, the millions of individuals who engage in political activity online. The Wall Street Journal opines, "The problem facing the FEC is that McCain-Feingold broadly restricts coordination with, and contributions to, political candidates. So what is the agency to do with all those people who use their Web sites to praise a candidate? Computers and Web access cost money, which could be construed as a financial contribution to a campaign. Ditto bloggers who link to politicians' Web sites, or any individual who forwards a candidate's press release to a list of buddies. All this is to say nothing of blogs that are affiliated with political campaigns and coordinate their activities." The FEC had an idea which would require government to calculate the percentage of individuals' electricity bills that went toward political advocacy (can you imagine). Another alternative would be to classify all bloggers as journalists, seeing as how the press is about the only entity exempt from McCain-Feingold. As a blogger I would resent the comparison to journalism and main stream media (MSM) which would directly impugn my intelligence and integrity.

French Learning Principle of G.O.Y.A.

The trade unions in France are in an uproar because French lawmakers have taken action that will, in effect, abolish France's 35-hour workweek. The National Assembly is changing a 1998 law, pushed by a Socialist-led government, that sought to reduce unemployment by making each worker do less. But now, President Jacques Chirac says, that's an obstacle to making French firms more competitive. A novel French idea, reduce the work week to reduce unemployment. Seems the Socialists always have had a hard time differentiating Karl Mark from Adam Smith. As Mr. Smith said, "There is no free lunch," while Mr. Marx promoted a chicken in every pot via government control. Of course this reminds me of the sales training guru Tom Hopkins who stated all the training and knowledge in the world won't help you succeed if you don't apply the principle of G.O.Y.A. aka "Get Off Your Ass!

Why Mark McGuire Ignores The Past

While still playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Mark McGuire got caught with a substance on his locker shelf. A sportswriter saw a vile which was Anabolic Creatine, the pharmaceutical name is "20-Methanodrol." Following is a manufacturers labeling information on this substance. Of course Sammy was also known to have used cork in his bat which is illegal. If your teenager is using creatine be warned. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield's Healthy Competition Foundation says anecdotal and single-case evidence from trainers, physicians, coaches and athletes suggests a link between creatine and cramping, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, dehydration, muscle strains, high blood pressure, incontinence, and abnormal liver and kidney function. Major League Baseball, their commissioner Bud Selig, and the MLB Union are all irresponsible as well as responsible for the rampant use of enhancement supplements among teens. Both "legal" and illegal substances are being ingested by thousands of teenage athletes, sometimes at the urging of their coaches. Congress has a right to investigate these issues. Major League Baseball and everyone involved with that organization has been given an intentional walk well into extra innings! Punishment should fit the crime. Test positive once, $100,000 fine and receive a 30 game suspension. 100% mandatory testing up to 4 times during the baseball season including Spring Training. Test positive twice, lifetime ban and removal from the record books. Putting teeth into the system is the only way to prevent further abuse of our national game and to eliminate the cowards and cheats. Parents are also responsible for monitoring their children. Sean Hannity...So Full of Himself

I will write more on talk radio, a viewpoint from a conservative, another time. But I must tell you, Sean Hannity of FoxNews and talk radio is as big a "blow gut" as Rush Limbaugh. Hannity is so self-promoting and arrogant it's amazing how many people call in to praise his every word and call him "A Great American." Yeah Right, a great American for a price. A recent caller asked Hannity why he never went to Iraq. There was stunned silence and then some muttering. No, not from the caller but from Hannity. The caller pressed him and all Hannity could say is it's difficult to set something like a visit to Iraq up. The caller pressed on mentioning Hannity and his many contacts. Uh, Uh, Uh!!! The caller mentioned his close friend Oliver North, wouldn't that be easy to arrange, go with him on one of his many visits. Well, Uh, Yeah, Maybe. So Hannity interviews Tommy Lasorda, another blow gut and butt kisser, to discuss steroids and the congressional hearings. Hannity blames the congressmen and women for grandstanding and embarrassing the players. Hannity exclaims, "Tommy, I want to clean up steroids in baseball. But the grandstanding, the sanctimony, the effort to embarrass these guys, trying to get them to pay for college — collegiate education on steroids was so over the top, and I hope you agree with me." First Hannity you must clean up your own pathetic act! Hannity continues, "Yes. You know what? But the way they did it is they wanted to embarrass these guys. Maybe we should start asking these congressmen if they've ever done drugs. Maybe did they ever drive drunk? Did they ever drink too much? And then the kids could get a good lesson in the papers tomorrow, too, Tommy." Embarrass the players? Question the politicians? What's the problem Sean, didn't the players already embarrass themselves? Marching in with lawyers, getting caught with cork in the bat (Sosa), getting caught with viles of enhancements in their lockers (McGuire) pleading the fifth, prepared statements of denial, unwillingness to discuss the past! This is why they get paid the big bucks. No not the players, the talk show hosts!

Hey Guys!!!

Something dreadful has happened to America's "English" version of language over the years. Sometime, someplace everyone has become a "Guy." Is this what feminists wished for? They simply wanted to become 'one of the guys'? I wasn't born yesterday so my upbringing resulted from a household and society of respect for fellow citizens, when greetings were polite, sincere and accurately acknowledged one's gender. This has nothing to do with transgender or confusion, it's one more disgusting change to the way society speaks and it doesn't bode well for our educational system. Checking my trusty Microsoft Thesaurus “Guy” is “Gentleman”, “Male”, or “Chap.” The antonym for guy is “woman.” However, seeking out meaning at Dictionary.com someone is changing the definition of words like liberals are attempting to change the Constitution. We are given choices but the term itself is listed primarily as “informal.” HA! Now we have graduated into an informal bunch of citizens, but according to whom? · First choice is: “a man, a fellow.” · Second Choice: “Persons of either sex.” (Who Said?) · Third Choice: Falling under “Chiefly British”, “A person of odd or grotesque appearance or dress.” (Ouch!) As defined here, guy is a noun. But when we use guy as a verb the meaning changes. “To hold up to ridicule; mock.” It’s becoming clearer now. Or is it? It was recently suggested my age has caught up to me; therefore, I was noticing things that either existed all along or maybe I just wasn’t hip. Hmmm, we’ll leave “hip” for another time. American’s have slaughtered the English language and we speak with less civility. My schooling was filled with writing, writing and more writing. Red ink all over term papers, reports with strict adherence to proper grammar. Becoming educated should not be a problem. Universities and colleges are everywhere with satellite campuses flourishing. Unfortunately liberal educators have agendas other than traditional education. This issue becomes more confusing when referring to Roget’s Thesaurus. · Guy: bloke, buck, cat, chap, fellow, gars, gentleman, lad, man, youth · Fall Guy: boob, can-carrier, chump, dupe, easy mark, easy touch, fool, goat, lamb to the slaughter, mark, patsy, pigeon, prize sap, sap, scapegoat, schlemiel, sitting duck, soft touch, stooge, sucker, trusting soul, victim, whipping boy · Mister Nice Guy: good egg, good guy, living doll, Mr. Nice Guy, nice guy · Adversary: antagonist, attacker, bad guy, bandit, competitor, contestant, enemy, foe, match, opposer, oppugnant, rival · Boy: buck, cadet, chap, child, chip, dude, fellow, gamin, guy, half-pint, junior, lad, little guy, master, punk, puppy, runt, schoolboy, shaveling, shaver, small fry, sonny, sprout, squirt, stripling, tadpole, whippersnapper, youngster, youth On close examination of Roget’s there is only one entry that comes close to referring a “guy” as a female using the term “living doll.” Searching back to the fifties and Broadway we find the long-standing musical hit, “Guys and Dolls.” Originally written as a romance it became a comedy much like the English language Americans have transformed. I am generally in mixed company, that is, males and females. It’s insulting to have a server in a restaurant greet us as “Guys.” TV is as guilty as anyone where every mixed group is referred to as “Guys.” In most cases, differentiating men for women, boys from girls is easy.
The solution would be the use of “Folks” as a general greeting, i.e.“Hi Folks”, or “Good Evening Folks.” The dictionary defines “Folks” as follows: The common people of a society or region considered as the representatives of a traditional way of life and especially as the originators or carriers of the customs, beliefs, and arts that make up a distinctive culture: a leader who came from the folk. People in general. If your having trouble with all of this may I suggest joining P.I.S.S.R. for any transgender issues you may have. In the mean time, get educated! We live in a society rich in schools, if not in schooling. Self-education is a wonderful tool, even if your formally educated.

Democrat's Steering the Titanic

Surrounded by 37 Democratic senators on the steps of the Capitol, Democratic Leader Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada threatened Tuesday to shut down the Senate over the issue of filibusters of President Bush’s judicial nominations. Reid would exempt from his shut-down only national defense matters and spending needed to ensure ongoing federal operations. While floundering around Washington D.C.without a plan, without a vision, without direction, the Democrats are headed for a watery political grave. Senator Reid and his colleagues are moving towards political suicide. More power to them!

Something Forgotten or Simply Arrogance?

eBay CEO dropped out of the running as successor to current Disney CEO, Mr. Eisner. Michael S. Malone writes in the Wall Street Journal that Ms. Whitman is a rising star and further substantiates this claim with a past article by the WSJ. It's obvious that eBay survived the dot.com bursting bubble but misses a discussion of the recent increase in fees eBay sellers must pay due to quarterly earnings at eBay, which missed their mark. There was uproar and many prominent sellers left eBay or at least added alternative selling venues to their online selling businesses. Significant in Malone’s article are these quotes. "Consider: a tech company, literally appearing out of nowhere, that manages to find the one truly sweet spot in the entire dot.com boom -- not only where scale adds value, but where the content is endlessly "sticky" to vendors and customers, and where the users do most of the work. That company not only becomes one of the fastest growing enterprises in history, but it actually changes the economy by reallocating vast underused inventories. And by creating a new path of upward mobility, it even affects the culture."The key sentence is "where the users do most of the work." The users are, in fact, the sellers who took a message board and turned it into the most prominent online selling venue in the world. Build it and they will come! The eBay "back office" certainly provided the expertise of software and hardware to develop the venue but it had the free help of internal message boards and communication from users. A free source of information, synergy and brainstorming. Not a bad deal. Malone continues, "The heart of eBay is neither its employees nor the millions of people who bid on the site. Rather, it is the hundreds of thousands of eBay sellers. Many, if not most, are working folks or retirees, people just trying to make a few bucks and supplement their incomes, maybe pay for their kids' schooling or add another bedroom on the house. They don't want some scheming suit running their global flea market -- no, they want somebody like Ms. Whitman, who seems like a perfectly nice lady who probably had a very good reason for jacking up their fees last month." "a very good reason for jacking up their fees." Hmmmm, seems Malone missed the boat of journalistic inquiry. Had he considered more than his premise of touting a female executive and looked further into management thinking maybe eBay sellers would get a concrete answer as to why fees were increased instead of spinning the reasoning over and over while never getting it correct. Fact is, eBay got caught with its pants down while trying to bail itself out. They are able to escape critical inquiry because the "ma and pa's" at eBay can't figure it out, while some of us with education and experience in corporate finance and economics see through the eBay blunder. Mr. Malone is very impressed with the unassuming Ms. Whitman. "But it isn't to be. This is one marriage between Hollywood and Silicon Valley that, happily, won't happen. Mr. Iger gets the Mouse. And yet, in failing to land the Disney job, Meg Whitman may enjoy an even bigger promotion: finally being recognized for the great business executive she is. And knowing her, she will probably just smile and change the subject."

Correct Mr. Malone, Ms. Whitman simply smiles and changes the subject. If you tax your engine too much it quits running. Since 12/31/04 eBay stock has dropped 37.39% but they did have a 100% stock split. However, sellers are still waiting for answers, shareholders seem to have gotten theirs! eBay sellers paid for it. Ms. Whitman isn't merely smiling, she's laughing all the way to the bank. Beware those who bite the hand that feeds them.

Lacking "Intestinal" Fortitude

A Florida lawmaker has proposed a 2-cent-per-roll tax on toilet paper to pay for wastewater treatment. And opponents had a field day poking fun at the idea. Republican Senate President Tom Lee said he didn't think the bill would pass, but said "We'll be getting to the bottom of it real soon." House Speaker Allan Bense says he's not wild about tax hikes, but that "we'll certainly let it go through the system." Democrats, though, say the bill has at least one good thing going for it — it's "pay-as-you-go." Source: FoxNews

Spain Mourns....United States Defends

MADRID, Spain — Spaniards lit candles, laid flowers and observed a long, mournful silence Friday to mark the first anniversary of the country's worst-ever terror attack, when 10 Al Qaeda bombs ripped through crowded commuter trains, killing 191 and wounding more than 1,500. What is fresh in my memory is 9/11, the attack that started the "War On Terrorism." Spain was part of the coalition of the willing, a country that had backbone. With the train bombing and a new leftist government in place Spain was no longer willing, it's backbone broken and appeasing terrorists their new mantra. As President Bush said, "You're either with us, or against us." Spain made that choice.

Home of The Brave!

The NCAA has asked the University of North Carolina at Pembroke to stop calling its sports teams the "Braves,“ saying the nickname is racially offensive to Native Americans. But it turns out the University was founded exclusively for American Indians, who called themselves the Braves. UNC Pembroke is still 20 percent Native American and the school's Athletic Director says they plan to keep the name as a tribute to their heritage. Meanwhile, the head of the region's Lumbee tribe tells the NCAA, "We don't have to have you tell us what's offensive." Source: FoxNews

Sex Education

The Washington Times reports on a new sex education program in Montgomery County, Md.: Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School in Bethesda, Seneca Valley High School in Germantown and Springbrook High School in Silver Spring will take part in the high school course in which 10th-graders will be shown how to put condoms on cucumbers. Oh dear, someone needs to explain the facts of life to the folks who run the Montgomery County schools. Lesson 1: What do you call people who put condoms on cucumbers? Parents! Attic Knave of The Day!

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the United Nations must recognize Hezbollah as a "force in society that one will have to factor in as we implement the resolution," referring to a U.N. resolution passed last year calling for the withdrawal of all Syrian forces from Lebanon and the disarmament of the country's militias. Mr. Annan believes the world needs his interpretation of U.N. Resolutions, which don't resolve anything and are worthless. In addition, Mr. Annan should understand, unlike Italy and the U.N., the United States does not negotiate with terrorists or terrorist states. I suppose the United States should recognize Hezbollah through crosshairs and the U.N. as impotent.

Pass the Del Monte Please

Teresa Heinz Kerry, the outspoken wife of Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, says she still doesn't trust the results from November's election and that two brothers may have been responsible for changing the outcome. Bob and Todd Urosevich are top executives at the two largest manufacturers of electronic voting machines and the Ukrainian immigrants have described their politics as conservative. But at a Seattle fundraiser, Heinz Kerry called the two brothers, "hard right" Republicans who "own 80 percent of the machines used in the US," and argued that it's "very easy to hack into the mother machines." The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says that Heinz Kerry offered no evidence to support her claims, but added, "I fear for '06."

Is This Woman Delusional?

"France and the United States, both countries are the founding fathers of democracy and human rights. France has a glorious military tradition and has troops serving in the field in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Africa and Haiti. In Kosovo, 3,000 French soldiers are deployed side by side with 1,800 American soldiers; in Afghanistan, our forces are also operating side by side as are our ships in the Gulf of Oman and reconnaissance aircraft in Djibouti. When You Thought You Heard It All...Part III

In my recent travels I had the occasion to use public restrooms. Nothing unusual about that and my experience was always uneventful. However, this does not seem to be the case for everyone in society. It seems individuals going through the "sex change" process are having some difficulty using public facilities. These individuals have not gone through their complete transformation into changing their sex completely. They seem to be caught in between the change. The problems for these people has escalated into confrontations and physcial beatings as they don't seem welcome in public restrooms, and they have trouble deciding between "Men's" and "Women's." Access is a problem and they want special laws and facilities to accommodate their predicament. An organization, P.I.S.S.R. had come into existence, the acronym standing for, "People In Search of Safe Restrooms." Their mission statement: "We believe that all people, regardless of their gender identification or presentation, have the right to access safe and dignified restroom facilities without fear of harassment, judgement or violence. In order to reach this goal, PISSR is committed to establishing gender-neutral bathrooms." So help me understand this. These indivduals want anti-discrimination protection as women and men, at the same time, when they aren't sure what restroom to enter in the first place. Fortunately I didn't have to help someone decide.

When You Thought You Heard It All...Part II

During my recent travels through Indiana and Ohio I made a "pit stop" for some precious fuel and a beverage at a very large truck stop. After filling up I pulled the car into a parking space front and center and adjacent to the front door of the food mart. In front, sitting in lawn chairs, were two young girls selling Girl Scout cookies. OH BOY!!! The thought of thin mints delighted my taste buds! Not to be. I observed one young girl lifting a small plastic baggie to her mouth and she appeared to be extracting a substance into it. Hmmmmmmmmm. I got out of the car and approached the door to the station food mart and while directly in front of the two "Scouts" I observed the unthinkable. The heavy set girl was spitting chewing tobacco into the plastic baggie!. YIKES! One can only hope she wasn't earning a merit badge for this disgusting habit. It's obvious she isn't taking anything of value away from scouting.

Especially the very small towns such as Milan from Hoosier's fame. However, one must wonder how much intoxication existed when they named the "Nameless River" in Ohio.

Senator Byrd and the "Nuclear Option"

Senator Byrd (D-WVA) and former KKK member has suggested the use of the "Nuclear Option" to end filibusters in the Senate is comparable to the Nazis and Hitler. The "nuclear option" is the scary-sounding name for a simple Senate rule change to stop the filibuster of appeals-court nominees. So now for a little known fact about Mr. Byrd: Mr. Byrd used the tactic to change Senate precedents on filibusters and other delaying tactics when he was Majority Leader in 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1987. Dan Rather...Lying Liberal from the Beginning

Dallas, Texas November 1963. A young Rather posing in front of the Texas School Book Depository, looking gravely into the distance. Eddie Barker the news director for CBS's radio and TV affiliates in Dallas at the time of President Kennedy's November 22, 1963, assassination, Barker is widely credited with first reporting on the air that the president was dead. Rather, then based in Dallas as a reporter for CBS's national news broadcast and working out of Barker's newsroom, later took credit for the scoop. Rather went on the air with a local Methodist minister who made a stunning claim: Children at Dallas's University Park Elementary School had cheered when told of the president's death. Rather was reinforcing the notion among distant media elites that Dallas was a reactionary "City of Hate." This claim wasn't true, and Rather knew it! Because of the shooting, which took place at 12:30 p.m., the principal had decided to close the school early, though without telling the students why. The children at the school--including three of Barker's own--were merely happy to be going home early, he was told. There couldn't have been any spontaneous cheering at the news of Kennedy's murder, because no such news had been announced. After Rather was told the story was untrue he went on to make it the centerpiece of his news report. With the discredited account likely to be challenged by the local affiliate's editors before being fed to New York, Rather sidestepped a customary film-editing session with Barker and arranged to file the report live instead, Barker says. "And so here's Dan with the preacher, telling this story about kids at UP cheering when told the president was dead." Livid at being lied to, Barker laid into Rather as soon as he returned to the newsroom, expelling the reporter and all his national-news colleagues from the building on the spot. "I said 'Get the hell out of here--you and this whole damn bunch!'" he says. As Barker himself--a CBS newsman for most of his career--says, "Anybody who followed CBS's coverage last year knows that they were doing a gut job on the President." So Mr. Rather was consistent, doing his job the same way for 40 + years with the blessing of CBS. Source: The Weekly Standard

Anyone visiting and reading this blog can tell I agonize over Ron Santo, former Chicago Cub player who has been rejected entrance into the Hall of Fame for 17 years. Unfairly I might add. Andy Behrens a freelance writer has a wonderful article about Santo, his life, career and what makes him beloved in Chicago. It is worthwhile reading.

Impeach Senator Robert Byrd

A pair of Jewish groups accused Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WVA) on Wednesday of making an outrageous and reprehensible comparison between Adolf Hitler's Nazis and a Senate GOP plan to block Democrats from filibustering. Byrd defended the right senators have to use filibusters — procedural delays that can kill an item unless 60 of the 100 senators vote to move ahead. However, former KKK member Byrd sees a comparison of rules of the Senate to block filibusters with Hitler's Nazi regime. Byrd cited Hitler's 1930s rise to power by, in part, pushing legislation through the German parliament that seemed to legitimize his ascension. "We, unlike Nazi Germany or Mussolini's Italy, have never stopped being a nation of laws, not of men," Byrd said. "But witness how men with motives and a majority can manipulate law to cruel and unjust ends." Byrd then quoted historian Alan Bullock, saying Hitler "turned the law inside out and made illegality legal." The 'nuclear option' is the nickname for the proposal to end filibusters of judicial nominations and Byrd compared this to Hitler and Nazis. Further, Byrd used the term "incinerate" to describe a legal Senatorial procedure to block the potential filibusters. "There is no excuse for raising the specter of the Holocaust crematoria in a discussion of the Senate filibuster," Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition said. "That kind of political heavy-handedness is inappropriate and reprehensible." At the least Byrd owes an apology; admonishment or impeachment would be more satisfactory for this out of touch politician.

Knaves of The Day!

No doubt the 'Knaves of the Day' are the Baseball Hall of Fames Veteran's Committee who failed to vote Ron Santo, former Chicago Cubs all-star third baseman, into Cooperstown. Of significant note is three (3) members did not even turn in a ballot. These anonymous individuals should be banned from the committee. Their votes would not have gotten Santo to the promised land of baseball legend but I don't see any excuse for not voting. Santo's baseball statistics are better than others who are in the Hall of Fame. This is, in part due to politics and unfair practices of the past. What is ignored, however, is Santo played with diabetes, a disease which is hard to control and effected his day to day abilities. Santo never told anyone of his disability until after his playing career had ended. It's about the "Tale of the Tape" and Santo's statistics speak for themselves. Ron is an inspiration to everyone as a leader in Juvenile Diabetes support and Cub radio broadcaster who suffers from heart disease and has lost both his legs due to complications from his diabetes. Yet Santo gets around the stadiums, clubhouses and manages a sunny outlook in the tradition of Ernie Banks. GOD Bless Ron Santo, he is what sports legends are made of.

AARP & Democrats...Just Say No!

The anti-Social Security reform band is drumming away, AARP is using it's mountain of cash, collected not by membership fees, but from selling insurance and mutual funds for huge commissions and non-profit wealth. The Democrats are on board, they would fit nicely into the credit card commercial where every answer is a resounding "NO"! These are just two groups of people who don't want American's afforded the power of flexibility and investment diversity with their own earnings while these same opportunities exist for government workers and while AARP gets rich off a cash cow in the name of investment vehicles. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan urged Congress to act quickly to fix looming financing problems for Social Security as well as Medicare. "If existing promises need to be changed, those changes should be made sooner rather than later," he told the House Budget Committee. Greenspan endorsed a key element of Bush's plans for Social Security, a proposal that would allow workers to set aside a portion of their payroll taxes to be invested on their own. He stressed that much more needed to be done to put the giant retirement program and Medicare, which he said faced even more severe financial strains, on a more sound footing. "Diverting the payroll taxes into the Social Security trust fund," Greenspan said, "had merely allowed the government to run larger budget deficits." He said that "switching to the private accounts would be a way to bolster the nation's low savings rate." The Democrat's answer is to grab a microphone and misquote using out of context sound bites from Chairman Greenspan and to ignore the substance of his call for Social Security reform. The White House is asking for everyone to participate; Democrats don't have a plan any further than obstructing a financial choice for all American's.

Knaves of The Day!

MADRID, Spain — A suspect in the Madrid train bombings was found to possess a sketch and technical details about Grand Central Terminal in New York, a report said Wednesday. The sketch and data were on a computer disk seized about two weeks after the March 11 train bombings in Madrid that killed 191 people last year, the newspaper El Mundo said. Spanish police turned the disk over to the U.S. agents from the FBI and CIA in December once they understood the scope of the technical data, the report said. The Knaves are the Spanish police and Spain as a whole for holding onto information of a potential terrorist plot in the U.S. known in March 2004 but not released to our authorities until December 2004. The new government who removed it's troops from Iraq certainly can't be considered an ally any longer!

Protesting the Ten Commandments

Suddenly a burst of anti-religion, atheist beliefs are attempting to trump long standing displays of the Ten Commandments on government property. The Ten Commandments are part of the foundation of our legal codes. President Harry Truman said, "The fundamental basis of this nation's laws was given to Moses on the Mount." Religion is a key part of our national identity. Around the country legal fights are taking place over monuments recognizing the Ten Commandments. In Alabama the Supreme Court Justice was removed from his position for his refusal to have a monument of these commandments removed from government property. Today in the Supreme Court another case is being argued of a similar monument in Texas donated in 1961. It is significant to note how our culture has changed through the years. Monuments which have reasonably stood the test of time as secular are now under fire. It is also significant to note the carvings of Moses and the Decalogue appear throughout the Court building, including some 43 times in the very chambers of the United States Supreme Court.

CBS Critque on Dan Rather

Here are some comments from people at CBS news concerning Dan Rather.

  • "60 Minutes" creator Don Hewitt tells the New Yorker he "prefers ABC's Peter Jennings."
  • Former CBS anchor Walter Cronkite says he often watched NBC's Tom Brokaw, and says Rather seemed to be "playing the role of newsman...whereas the other two appeared to be more the third-party reporter."
  • Veteran "60 Minutes" correspondent Mike Wallace says Rather is "uptight and occasionally contrived," adding, "I believe him. But I don't find him as satisfying to watch."

Who Changed Webster's Definition?

In 1828, Webster defined Marriage as “The act of uniting a man and woman for life; Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.” However, by 1913 Webster defined Marriage this way, “The act of marrying, or the state of being married; legal union of a man and a woman for life, as husband and wife; wedlock; matrimony.” [a legal term, no longer defined as instituted by God] The current edition of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Marriage is now defined as “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law, the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage.” [only a legal term that applies to everyone and everything] Who changed the definition? Academia, the Press, and the Judiciary. The Liberals!

Getting in Bed with Europe....Again!

My, My...Is the President following diplomacy by getting in the sack with France, Germany, Russia and our other diplomatic foes on Iran. It sickens me when I see politicians playing "nice, nice" for the cameras and it sends a message which is very disconcerting. Considering how France lied to former Secretary of State Colin Powel on Iraq what makes the Bush administration think they will play fair with Iran? My GOD, Putin thinks the Bush administration fired Dan Rather! The EU thinks they can purchase assurances from the Mullahs to refrain from their nuclear ambitions and destruction of the free world, especially the U.S. The Wall Street Journal states, "the U.S., with its stake in Iraq and the Persian Gulf, its opposition to terrorist groups that Iran sponsors, and its commitment to spreading democracy in the Mideast, cannot be indifferent to a nuclear Iran. The problem is not that we have yet to hit on the right mix of carrots and sticks to cajole Iran into responsibility. The problem is that Iran's theocratic regime is by its nature inimical to American interests; any move that extends its life also prolongs the hazard it poses to the U.S." Signing on to Europe's strategy offers one certain outcome: a nuclear Iran.

Tax and Spend Republicans????

YIKES!! No surprise here with new Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels calling for a tax increase two weeks into his new office. Cato Institute shows and alarming trend on it's report card of 50 Governors grading them A-F. It's noteworthy that Ohio, a state in which I recently moved to, has a Governor with a glaring "F" attached to his name. Congratulations Mr. Taft. With 35 Governors rated (Newly elected are not on current list) Republican Governors are as follows: A: 2, B: 5, C: 6, D: 4, F: 1. Of course the Dem's look even worse. No surprise there!
