In a move that amused some and worried others, the Cook County Republican Party announced yesterday a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the indictment and conviction of Chicago’s Mayor Daley for political corruption. Writing in the Chicago Tribune, Jim Walsh reports that Gary Sokien, the Cook County GOP chairman said in a statement: “The arrogance of Richard Daley is appalling...The corruption (in Chicago) is so pervasive, so extensive and has been going on so long that most of these insiders don’t even have a clue that their actions are illegal. We hope that this reward will inspire someone with critical knowledge to come forward.” Robert Klein Engler, an adjunct professor at Roosevelt University in Chicago writes, “What’s new? Isn’t this business as usual? If you live here, then you know what’s going on. In Chicago, to get ahead it’s not what you know but who you know. There is a culture of 'who do you know' politics that radiates from city hall, and for too long has been the trademark of city government. Richard M. Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean has denounced last month's Supreme Court ruling on eminent domain as a product of "The president and his right-wing Supreme Court." In fact, not one of the justices on the Supreme Court was appointed by President Bush. And the most conservative justices — William Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas — dissented on that ruling. Dean, speaking to College Democrats, also accused Republicans of "bringing a culture of corruption to Washington," saying, "they've sold our government to the highest bidder." Birth certificates are supposed to establish identity and parentage. In Massachusetts, the only state in the union where same-sex marriage is legal, gay rights advocates want the words "Mother" and "Father" removed from birth certificates, and put in their place the terms "Parent A" and "Parent B." It's the first revelation that Plame participated in anti-Bush political activity while working for the CIA. The Federal Election Commission record lists her occupation as "retired" even though she's still a CIA staffer. Under employer it says: "N.A." Federal rules require a political-action committee to ask all donors to list their employers. The love struck electrical engineering graduate said: "Had I succeeded in wooing Chelsea, I would have had a grand wedding. "I would have invited Archbishop Desmond Tutu to preside at the ceremony." Actress and activist Jane Fonda says she intends to take a cross-country bus tour to call for an end to U.S. military operations in Iraq. "I have not taken a stand on any war since Vietnam," she said. "I carry a lot of baggage from that." If she's so unhappy why not take her baggage to Vietnam? Fonda incited controversy in July 1972 when she was photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun while on a tour of the country to drum up support to end the war. WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. John Kerry urged the White House on Friday to release "in their entirety" all documents and memos from Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' tenure in two Republican administrations.
"We cannot do our duty if either Judge Roberts or the Bush administration hides elements of his professional record," said the haughty, French looking Massachusetts senator, who was his party's presidential candidate last year. Kerry also claims to have "served" in Vietnam.
Isn't this request simply remarkable, coming from someone who promised to sign off on Form 180, to release in it's entirety, his military records. To date the entire military records of John F. Kerry have not been revealed. When is Kerry going to take responsibility for coming clean without lying to the American people? What is Kerry hiding?
KABUL: Four suspected Taliban militants were killed in southern Afghanistan early yesterday when a bomb they were attempting to plant on a highway exploded, a provincial governor said. “Four Taliban who were trying to plant a remote-controlled bomb in the Langar area, by the side of the highway en route to Tirin Kot, blew themselves up,” Uruzgan governor Jan Mohamed said. “Police discovered the bodies along with four Kalashnikovs,” he said. The area around Tirin Kot in troubled Uruzgan province has been the scene of frequent attacks by militants who often use crudely made bombs. Does this mean they don't get the Virgins? LONDON (AFP) - London Mayor Ken Livingstone said a shoot-to-kill policy was "overwhelmingly" the way to deal with suspected suicide bombers after police shot a man dead on the subway. "If you are dealing with someone who might be a suicide bomber, if they remain conscious they could trigger plastic explosives or whatever device is on them," Livingstone said.

Well this does give Mr. Leahy something to whine about publicly. New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, also on the committee, said he would push Judge Roberts to answer detailed questions about his views on issues, and that, lacking concrete answers, he might try to "block the nomination." Schumer has become as pathetic as anyone in the Senate. "The burden is on a nominee to the Supreme Court to prove that he is worthy, not on the Senate to prove he is unworthy." This coming from someone as unworthy for office as anyone. Could Schumer find a real job? We doubt it. "Who knows about this guy?" asks Senator Tom Harkin (D., Iowa). Sorry Senator, we suppose you'll have to earn your pay and find out! "The president had an opportunity to unite the country with his Supreme Court nomination, to nominate an individual in the image of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Instead, by putting forward John Roberts' name, President Bush has chosen a more controversial nominee and guaranteed a more controversial confirmation process," said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Gee I don't feel "ununited." Maybe the Senator is discussing his outrageous claims about Gitmo on the senate floor and the fact he feels for the "enemy combatants" more than the safety of the homeland. My, we haven't heard from Teddy Kennedy yet. That should be really good, but he was undoubtedly busy taking inventory of his liquor cabinet, of course, while slurping up it's contents. Let's examine the votes for Judge Roberts for the DC Court of Appeals in 2003. The Judiciary Committee voted 16-3 to send Judge Roberts to the Senate floor for a vote. Confirmed by the Senate without a roll call vote. The Nay's? Kennedy, Durbin and Schumer! What a surprise.
~ACLU: The American Civil Liberties Union has found a sympathetic ear for its latest assault against the Boy Scouts. At issue is the famous Jamboree, held since 1981 at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia and indirectly receiving support from the Army in billeting, infrastructure, and so forth. The ACLU argues that this arrangement breaches the First Amendment's separation between church and state. Because the Scouts require members to "privately exercise their religious faith as directed by their families and religious advisors," the ACLU petitioned the court to declare the organization "theistic" and "pervasively sectarian." ~Federal Judge Blanche Manning: Manning ruled the Boy Scouts an overtly religious association because it "excludes atheists and agnostics from membership." She ordered the Army to expel the next Jamboree from Fort A. P. Hill in 2010, by which time we trust the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals will have overturned her decision. ------------------- As the Wall Street Journal so aptly states: "If Her Honor paid a visit, she'd learn that the 40,000 young men aren't gathering for a tent revival meeting or Great Awakening. Mostly, they're getting together to cultivate an appreciation for the outdoors and to participate in the rites of summer camp. The Scouts will celebrate what they call their 'bedrock values,' which, yes, include faith, but also patriotism, courage, service, conservation and civic virtue." The AP, New York Times, Washington Post: Rove "originally learned about the operative [Plame] from the news media and not government sources, according to a person briefed on the testimony." Rove was the second source for Bob Novak's column identifying Plame's role in arranging Wilson's trip to Niger according to the NY Times. After hearing Mr. Novak's account, the person who has been briefed on the matter said, Mr. Rove told the columnist: "I heard that, too." The first source, whose identity has not been revealed, provided the outlines of the story and was described by Mr. Novak as "no partisan gunslinger." Mr. Novak wrote that when he called a second official for confirmation, the source said, "Oh, you know about it." That second source was Mr. Rove. If this account is accurate, then Rove simply confirmed a fact that was already in circulation. He no more "outed" Plame than Wilson did when he peddled his "outing" allegation to various left-wing journalists after Novak's column ran, states Opinion Journal. In an interview with CNN, Joe Wilson says, "My wife was not a clandestine officer the day that Bob Novak blew her identity." This statement alone gets Rove off the hook yet Mr. Wilson and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) hold a combined press conference asking for Karl Rove to be dismissed. An important fact the Democrats and press wish to ignore is this. Joe Wilson was, in fact, lying when he said Iraq never attempted to purchase uranium from Niger. This fact was in the 9/11 Commission Report. And if Wilson was the operative who went to Niger to investigate this, Wilson's wife is guilty of nepotism. While Wilson and his wife do interviews with Vanity Fair and the talk show circuit they continue to make absurd and false allegations against Karl Rove. They want all the attention to promote Wilson's book while Democrats waste taxpayer dollars chasing their tails in the summer heat.

The Gallic taste for militarism, even if only for show, may be compensation for their current weakness or nostalgia for the imagined past. Considering the string of French military losses in the 20th century, it's almost quaint, except that the images of Bastille Day don't exactly square with the efforts of France's leaders to present their country as leading a pacifist vanguard in the world. Few people will forget then-Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin's lectures to America about avoiding war at any cost a few years back. Then again, it might strike outsiders as equally strange that the French would glorify -- Mr. de Villepin's favorite word being "gloire" -- a failed revolution that ended up bringing to power a war-mongering fascist, Napoleon Bonaparte -- who happens to be the current prime minister's favorite figure in history. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton went on the attack against President Bush' in a speech Sunday, accusing him of damaging the economy by overspending while giving tax cuts to the rich. The Democrat from New York also accused Bush of depriving U.S. soldiers of equipment needed to fight the war in and cutting funding for scientific research. "I sometimes feel that Alfred E. Neuman is in charge in Washington," Clinton said referring to the freckle-faced Mad magazine character. She drew a laugh from crowd when she described Bush's attitude toward tough issues with Neuman's catchphrase: "What, me worry?" She said the middle class is now being threatened by an ailing economy caused by the growing national debt, growing health care costs, the loss of pensions and the loss of manufacturing diversity. Clinton also said the U.S. needs to focus on exploring alternative energy sources to become less reliant on oil. Hmmm....lets see now....
