Will Lawyers Be Our End?

"The U.S. intelligence community is palsied by lawyers. When we were going to capture Osama bin Laden, for example, the lawyers were more concerned with bin Laden's safety and his comfort than they were with the officers charged with capturing him. We had to build an ergonomically designed chair to put him in, special comfort in terms of how he was shackled into the chair. They even worried about what kind of tape to gag him with so it wouldn't irritate his beard. The lawyers are the bane of the intelligence community."

Weather History for RFK

Since Robert Kennedy Jr. has earned "Attic Knave of The Day" honors (below), we have some expert information supported by historical fact concerning hurricanes and tropical storms.

Because hurricanes form over warm ocean water, it is easy to assume that the recent rise in their number and ferocity is because of global warming.
But that is not the case, scientists say. Instead, the severity of hurricane seasons changes with cycles of temperatures of several decades in the Atlantic Ocean. The recent onslaught "is very much natural," said William M. Gray, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University who issues forecasts for the hurricane season.
From 1970 to 1994, the Atlantic was relatively quiet, with no more than three major hurricanes in any year and none at all in three of those years. Cooler water in the North Atlantic strengthened wind shear, which tends to tear storms apart before they turn into hurricanes.
In 1995, hurricane patterns reverted to the active mode of the 1950's and 60's. From 1995 to 2003, 32 major hurricanes, with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or greater, stormed across the Atlantic. It was chance, Dr. Gray said, that only three of them struck the United States at full strength.

"Now we are all learning what it’s like to reap the whirlwind of fossil fuel dependence which Barbour [Alabama Governor] and his cronies have encouraged. Message to Cindy Sheehan and Friends

"We all share the love of peace, but our sons and daughters must learn two lessons men everywhere and in every time have had to learn; that the price of freedom is dear but not nearly so costly as the loss of freedom—and that the advance and continuation of civilization depend on those values for which men have always been willing to die."end on those values for which men have always been willing to die." —Ronald Reagan epend on those values for which men have always been willing to die."

"Sometimes I don't think Cheney is awake enough to know what's going on. He's a sick man ... He's got heart disease but the disease is not restricted to that part of his body. Ahmed Chalabi A Force in Iraq

Robert L. Pollock writes an interesting article in today's Opinion Journal discussing Ahmed Chalabi, who was forced out of prominence by the White House, DOD and CIA including L. Paul Bremer's Coalition Provisional Authority. Here are some comments from the article:
xxx
"Very personally courageous," "not afraid to make decisions," and a "hugely important figure in Iraq" are among the phrases I heard U.S. officers apply to him during two weeks I spent in the country earlier this month. Another sums up the stakes thus: "Chalabi is there to talk about protecting strategic infrastructure so they can sell oil so they can fund their own security-force development."
xxx
He's referring to the fact that Mr. Chalabi has assumed special responsibility for oil and infrastructure security -- a role in which he is widely recognized to be making major improvements on the abysmal performance of L. Paul Bremer's Coalition Provisional Authority and Ayad Allawi's interim government. I watch him in action firsthand shortly after my arrival, chairing a meeting of the Energy Committee he helped create. He suggests that the electrical grid be mapped with GPS, since after a recent attack it took three days to locate the damage. The issue is quickly resolved, as a water ministry official informs the room that such data already exists and that the problem is merely information-sharing.
xxx
"Chalabi has emerged as a central figure in the effort to improve infrastructure security," says Gen. David Petraeus, the overseer of Iraqi Security Force training and one of the few officials willing to risk offending the foreign policy mandarins in Washington by going on record about the matter. In particular, Mr. Chalabi is credited with obtaining additional Iraqi funding and focus on the effort, resulting in what one U.S. observer calls "the highest crude oil exports in anyone's memory."
xxx
Keeping in mind the CIA and DOD raided Mr. Chalabi residence and attempted to disgrace him in hopes he would leave the country and not be an influence in Iraq politics. Held at gunpoint Chalabi's guards were stripped of their weapons and permits to carry them. One problem, Cahlabi stayed put and became Deputy Prime Minister in Iraq's new government.
xxx
The Chalabi treatment has confirmed that the CIA really can be as nasty and incompetent as its critics on the left used to claim. But what explains the gross political miscalculation by the Bush administration, which knew the CIA had major problems? Part of it, surely, has to do with influence of the foreign policy "realists," who didn't really believe in the regime-change mission and blamed Mr. Chalabi for luring the U.S. into Iraq. (The idea that Mr. Chalabi did so by passing faulty intelligence has been thoroughly discredited by the bipartisan Robb-Silberman commission.) Insofar as they had to go through the motions, the realists preferred Iraqi yes-men. "Get him back in his cage," Colin Powell is reported by the Washington Post to have demanded of Mr. Wolfowitz after Mr. Chalabi began pushing for the rapid restoration of sovereignty in late 2003. "I can't control him," Mr. Wolfowitz is said to have replied.
xxx
The question now is whether his bosses in Washington are mature enough to put aside past mistakes and work with Mr. Chalabi. They certainly no longer have to worry about him being written off as an American puppet.
xxx
The Attic is a full supporter of the Bush administration but we cal a spade a spade. Politicians are just that, the CIA has proved inept all to many times. We find this article important enough to get a little deeper into the inter-workings of the Iraq government.

Don't Blame Haagen-Dazs

The PR firm working for Cindy Sheehan as she protests outside President Bush's ranch in Texas campaigning over the death of her son killed in Iraq has been paid for by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
The 24-hour media attention being lavished upon Sheehan owes as much to the professionals supporting her as it does to the emotional impact of her story.
Fenton Communications is assisting Sheehan, the mother of a US soldier killed in Iraq, to earn media coverage for her vigil. TrueMajority, a nonprofit advocacy group created by Cohen is paying Washington, DC-based Fenton from the $70,000 that the group has raised so far to support Sheehan's protest efforts.
"Fenton is helping her with straight-out media relations, such as interviews and juggling different requests," said Jason Salzman, president of Cause Communications, which handles media relations for TrueMajority. "She's tapped into feelings against the war that have yet to [be] widely disseminated in the media."
xxx
Fenton also worked with Sheehan to publicize candlelight vigils held on Wednesday in 1,672 US cities in sympathy with her action. When Fenton organized a press briefing on Tuesday to discuss the coming vigils, about 100 journalists participated in the teleconference, an unheard of number for a typical Fenton-managed press briefing.
xxx
And they say the main stream media isn't biased!

Renewed Declaration of War...Will Sheehan Protest?

Mohammed Deif, Hamas Senior Commander, has renewed a declaration of war on Israel. "You are leaving Gaza today in shame. Today you are leaving hell. But we promise you that tomorrow all Palestine will be hell for you, God willing."
xxx
This pathetic bunch of terrorists are claiming false credit for the voluntary Israel pullout from Gaza and renewing their declaration of war on Irasel. If they were so tough, how could 8,000 people and a country control over 1 million Palestinians for years? Hamas kills innocent civilians, women and children who are defenseless against suicide bombers. Hamas terrorists cover their faces with ski masks because they are gutless. Hamas is like al-Qaeda, unable to stand up against a military force or able to join civil society for peaceful intentions.
xxx
These are the impotent terrorists, who Cindy Sheehan and her followers support. After all, Sheehan's comments are filled with inaccuracies, vitriol and are anti-Semitic as well as anti-American. Sheehan and her sponsors resemble Mullah's from Iran and local mosques, pledging defeat of the "infidel."
xxx
Sheehan believes Iraq was better off with Saddam Hussein. She and her followers believe torture chambers, rape; human shredders are all better for a free society. Sheehan uses her liberties, which were won and retained with the blood of our citizens, to plead her false case of America's fight against terrorism. Now she is being joined this weekend by neo-Nazis (see post below) whose hatred wil mix nicely with Sheehans misguided views.
xxx
The right to protest and freely express views are hard fought liberties. Airing commercials on televisions are pathetic attempts to discredit our military and America's right to live freely. These people approve of 9/11 and the holocaust for they believe the right of tyrants is more important than the fight to stay free. Cindy Sheehan and her followers are no better than Hamas, Hezbollah or al-Qaeda for they promote killing innocent people and denounce the right to free societies. Sheehan is no longer a grieving mother but an embarrassment to her family and fallen son who died honorably. Sheehan dishonors all that is good about America and what it stands for.

When Is The Next Full Moon?

"I'm just so honored that the universe chose me to be the spark that has set off a raging inferno," Cindy Sheehan, back in Crawford, Texas, tells the Los Angeles Times. "And when I had to leave, it proved that you don't need the spark anymore, because the fire is burning. And it's not going to go out. If George Bush came out and spoke with me today and we went home, this wouldn't end."
-----------
The Rev. Al Sharpton plans to join peace activist Cindy Sheehan, known as the Peace Mom, on Sunday near President Bush's Texas ranch. Sharpton's office said Thursday he would participate in a prayer vigil Sunday with Sheehan in Crawford, Texas.
-----------
Last but not least is the neo-Nazi group "Stormfront." Their announcement reads as follows.
xxx
"I'm driving out to Crawford, Texas tomorrow, Friday August 26th to help put up a White Nationalist voice in the protest against Bush's War for Israel that was started by Cindy Sheehan. We'll be uploading digital photos, and maybe video, from Crawford so that Stormfront's 58,000 Members (achieved today) and hundreds of thousands of Guests can follow the events in Crawford from a White patriot perspective.
xxx
The facilities at the Crawford Ranch Camp Casey are excellent: good food, shade, tents, water, toilets, parking, and all basic necessities are there in ample supply. Most supplies are free. All you need to bring is yourself, a good shade hat, and a long-sleeved shirt.
xxx
Our purpose in journeying to the Crawford protest against Bush's Neocon War for Israel is to Let The World Know That White Patriots Were First & Loudest To Protest This War For Israel.
xxx
We don't want leftist Johnny-come-latelys who are misleadingly protesting this war as if the war is about oil (not true), or as if it's right-wing patriots who launched this war (not true) to hijack the issue from us.We want to challenge these leftists with the fact that their leftist leaders, like Hillary Clinton, are on the same War for Israel team as the cowardly Republicans who have been bought and paid for in the Senate, House, White House, and Media by the Jewish Neocon political machine."

Attic Quote of The Day!

"Contrary to the assertions of many opponents of immigration, from Capitol Hill to CNN, the size of our foreign workforce is mainly determined by supply and demand, not Benedict Arnold CEOs or a corporate quest for 'cheap' labor. Since the H-1B visa quota was first enacted in 1992 there have been several years amid a soft economy in which it hasn't been filled. When U.S. companies can find domestic workers to fill jobs, they prefer to hire them.
xxx
The H-1B debate also exposes those who are giving lip service to immigration 'reform' while doing nothing to fix the problem because they'd rather exploit it for political purposes. American companies don't have that luxury. They operate in the real world."

Say It Ain't So...Is There No Crafting Pride?

After years of resistance, if not outright disdain, a growing number of small U.S. brewers are braving beer snobs' barbs and putting their beer in aluminum. We certainly are in favor of marketing and small business growth, but canning these hand-crafted beauties? Grrrrr. The can is becoming popular with microbrews, actually increasing sales in leaps and bounds. xxx According to the Wall Street Journal in their own "unscientific" test, of the 16 beers tasted from cans, in average scores, rated four of the five top spots Could it be a canned beer apocalypse. Smelling The Money....Lawyers Drool!

The tally of lawsuits against Merck & Co. in state and federal court over its painkiller Vioxx is nearly 5,000 and growing, lawyers said in federal court Thursday, less than a week after the drug maker suffered a stinging defeat in a state court in Texas.
xx
It's nice to know 1,800 new cases have already been filed and that number could eventually double, or even triple. We read some lawyers were crying after the Texas verdict against Merck.
xxx
Ahhhhh....tears of joy we suppose! Hopefully the lawers weren't tripping over themselves on the court house steps, with any injuries to themselves more suits would certainly be on the way. We'd hate to see lawyers suing the government for negiligence.

Attic Knave of The Day!

Jean-Marie Leblanc - Tour de France Director and L'Equipe
xxx
Jean-Marie Leblanc praised the French sports daily L'Equipe for an investigation that reported that six urine samples provided by Armstrong during the 1999 Tour tested positive for the red blood cell-booster EPO.The newspaper on Tuesday accused Armstrong of using EPO during his first Tour win in 1999.
xxx
The allegations surfaced six years later because EPO tests on the 1999 samples were carried out only last year — when scientists at a lab outside Paris used them for research to perfect EPO testing.
xxx
Five-time cycling champion Miguel Indurain said he couldn't understand why scientists would use samples from the 1999 Tour for their tests. "That seems bizarre, and I don't know who would have the authorization to do it," he told L'Equipe. "I don't even know if it's legal to keep these samples."
xxx
The Attic concurs Mr. Indurain, it's simply an anti-American, French witch hunt.

Salt Lake City Mayor Picks Up Where Sheehan Left Off

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson called for "the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen" to protest President Bush's appearance Monday before a national veterans convention. "This administration has been disastrous to the country," Anderson said Friday. "If people could organize and speak out in an effective manner from the reddest state in the country, that would garner a lot of attention."
xxx
"Patriotism," the mayor said, "demands that people speak out when we see our government officials acting in such anti-democratic and deceitful ways to the people of our country." He also said: "I don't understand people simply blindly going along with the sort of deceit and utter cruelty of this administration. It's not just we have the right to speak out, but we have the obligation to speak out when we see misconduct on the part of the government. The most patriotic thing we can do is stand up against the misuse of governmental power."
xxx
Let us examine democracy Mr. Mayor. Three Sunni election volunteers were kidnapped Friday, and then murdered in public in front of a mosque, for daring to put up election posters urging Iraqis to vote in the October constitutional referendum. Other Sunnis have also been assassinated, including some working on the committee writing the new Iraq constitution.
xxx
Amid their search for partisan vindication, it would be nice if these critics acknowledged, just once, that the real enemies in Iraq aren't Dick Cheney or George Bush but the masked terrorists who kill their fellow Iraqis for putting up election posters and continue to work on a Democratic constitution for their country.

Misguided Jurors...Why Drug Prices Go Up

A jury whose members said they wanted to "punish" Merck found the company liable and awarded $253.4 million in damages. There was no direct causal link between Vioxx and the arrythmia that the autopsy showed had caused the death of a Texas man whose wife brought the suit. The only evidence for such a link was the speculation from the medical examiner that Vioxx had caused a heart attack that she had not been able to detect and had not bothered to put on the death certificate.
xxx
The only thing this verdict will do is bring on hundreds of lawsuits and make the trial lawyers richer. This verdict comes from a narrow minded group of citizens who believe it necessary to punish corporations on the premise "big business is bad." Justice may be blind, these jurors certainly were.
xxx
Interviews with jurors suggest that many tuned out Merck's arguments and focused instead on evidence they understood: that a big corporation allegedly covered up defects with its product. Evidence in an email, not a publication or formal document, but an email suggesting a problem. This is conclusive evidence?
xxx
According to his death certificate, Robert Ernst died of an arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat, not a heart attack. While scientific evidence suggests Vioxx can promote blood clots leading to a heart attack, no data have linked the drug with arrhythmias. Jurors who voted against Merck said much of the science sailed right over their heads.
xxx
Thomas Wheeler, interim chairman of pathology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, told the jury that Mr. Ernst's clogged arteries were likely to blame for his heart attack. "He was like a walking time bomb," Dr. Wheeler said. He added, "I think Vioxx had nothing to do absolutely whatsoever with his death." Merck's clinical trials showed an elevated risk of heart attacks but only in persons that took Vioxx in heavy doses for intestinal polyps for 18 months or more. Ernst took Vioxx only for eight months.
xxx
We understand executives lie, but in a case with little scientific evidence and many reasons for a heart attack it's the blame game and Corporate America gets whacked. Unfortunately the Enron's of the world created this misconception leaving private citizens to believe all companies are evil.
xxx
The real losers in this case are the millions of pain sufferers who will now live with their pain and take other drugs which induce internal bleeding, something Vioxx did not contribute to. Justice is blind and medical research will be hindered by this verdict. Lawyers will continue to foam at the mouth and drool over the possiblities of riches, no matter who suffers. folks are left far worse off because of a double whammy: a Food and Drug Administration that yanks too many drugs off the market because it has no idea how to evaluate risk, and individual jurors who think it is their solemn duty to "send a message" to the drug companies on whose products we so desperately depend.
xxx
Richard A. Epstein, James Parker Hall Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and the Peter and Kirsten Bedford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution states his opinion on this horrendous verdict.
xxx
"I would like to send my message to Mr. Lanier [Prosecutor] and those indignant jurors. It's not from an irate tort professor, but from a scared citizen who is steamed that those 'good people' have imperiled his own health and that of his family and friends. None of you have ever done a single blessed thing to help relieve anybody's pain and suffering. Just do the math to grasp the harm that you've done.
xxx
Understand that no future drug will be free of adverse side effects, nor reach market, without the tough calls that Merck had to make with Vioxx. Your implicit verdict is to shut down the entire quest for new medical therapies. Your verdict says you think that the American public is really better off with just hot-water bottles and leftover aspirin tablets.
xxx
In plain English, Mr. Lanier, you're out of court before you make your opening statement. You've already proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the fancy diagrams that university economists use to explain why the negligence system maximizes social welfare is an academic delusion that clever lawyers use to prop up a broken tort system."

Teachers Union Boycotts Wal-Mart (Commentary)

On August 10th the National Education Association, the country's largest teachers union, participated in a nationwide back-to-school boycott of Wal-Mart. The ''Send Wal-Mart Back to School" campaign urges parents and teachers to pledge not to shop for school supplies at the bargain retailer.
xxx
The teachers union aggressively opposes measures and policies that give parents more choices in the education marketplace, such as school vouchers, tuition tax credits, charter schools, and home education. The ultimate irony of the NEA's boycott against Wal-Mart is that the union is asking parents to exercise a choice in their back-to-school shopping.
xxx
The NEA even criticizes the Walton family, the founders of Wal-Mart, for contributing to ''anti-public education efforts like private school voucher initiatives and anti-public educations PACs."
In 2004, the Wal-Mart & SAM’S CLUB Foundation matched $61 million in grants for organizations in 3,500 communities, helping to support organizations large and small, from local schools, YMCA and other youth programs, fire departments, libraries and more. The Wal-Mart & SAM’S CLUB Foundation’s matching grant program is only one arm of the dollars given year round to local community services.
In 2004, 3,500 teachers and schools were honored through the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Program – recognized as the largest teacher recognition program in the U.S. In excess of $4 million was given to schools in Wal-Mart communities through local, state and national teacher of the year awards. In addition to assisting teachers last year, Wal-Mart provided through its Sam Walton Community Scholarship program $6 million in scholarships to 6,000 high school seniors who began college in 2004.
xxx
While teachers dig into their own pockets to buy school supplies one must wonder what purpose a boycott of Wal-Mart serves. The teachers should start holding their union accountable for misappropriating its funds which could, in fact, purchase school supplies at a discount from Wal-Mart.

Indifferent To Democracy (Must Read)

As the U.S. stumbles in Iraq, many in the Arab world (but also in the American academic left and isolationist right) have solemnly, at times pleasurably, described the situation as fitting retribution for "neocolonialism." The debate on America's imperial calling, particularly in the Middle East, is surely absorbing; yet from an Arab perspective, particularly that of the region's liberals, far more essential than how a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq might smash the Bush administration's hubris is the misfortune it will visit on Arabs striving for change.
xxx
How the U.S. adventure in Iraq ends is anybody's guess. However, its repercussions will be felt, first, by the Arabs themselves. By refusing to profit from the prospective democratic upheaval that Saddam's removal ushered in; by never looking beyond the American messenger in Iraq to the message itself; by lamenting external hegemony while doing nothing to render it pointless, Arabs merely affirmed their impotence. The self-pitying Arab reaction to the Iraq war showed the terrible sway of the status quo in the Middle East. An inability to marshal change for one's benefit is the stuff of captive minds.
xxx

Gas Lines A Mounting Problem

That is, if your in China or Hong Kong. Gasoline shortages in recent days have become so severe that Hong Kong's South China Morning Post reports that the waiting lines have infuriated "everyone from taxi drivers to farmers across the country, and could threaten social stability." The Chinese are holding domestic prices of oil at $10 a barrel below the world price. Price controls that are set below the market price always cause shortages, because the artificially low price causes demand to rise and supply to fall. Hmmmmmmm...We smell Carternomics at work!

The negative full length TV news stories on the economy outnumbered positive stories by an overwhelming ratio of 4 to 1. 62% of the news stories on the Big Three TV networks have portrayed the U.S. economy in negative fashion. A news story on National Public Radio announced that "as everyone knows, the primary cause of the budget deficit was the Bush tax cuts."

Open Letter to Cindy Sheehan (The Other Side)

I lost a son in Iraq and Cindy Sheehan does not speak for me.
xxx I grieve with Mrs. Sheehan, for all too well I know the full measure of the agony she is forever going to endure. I honor her son for his service and sacrifice. However, I abhor all that she represents and those who would cast her as the symbol for parents of our fallen soldiers.
The fallen heroes, until now, have enjoyed virtually no individuality. They have been treated as a monolith, a mere number. Now Mrs. Sheehan, with adept public relations tactics, has succeeded in elevating herself above the rest of us. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida declared that Mrs. Sheehan is now the symbol for all parents who have lost children in Iraq. Sorry, senator. Not for me.
xx
Maureen Dowd of the New York Times portrays Mrs. Sheehan as a distraught mom standing heroically outside the guarded gates of the most powerful and inhumane man on earth, President Bush. Ms. Dowd is so moved by Mrs. Sheehan's plight that she bestowed upon her and all grieving parents the title of "absolute moral authority." That characterization epitomizes the arrogance and condescension of anyone who would presume to understand and speak for all of us. How can we all possess "absolute moral authority" when we hold so many different perspectives? xx
I don't want that title. I haven't earned that title. xx Although we all walk the same sad road of sorrow and agony, we walk it as individuals with all the refreshing uniqueness of our own thoughts shaped in large measure by the life and death of our own fallen hero. Over the past few days I have reached out to other parents and loved ones of fallen heroes in an attempt to find out their reactions to all the attention Mrs. Sheehan has attracted. What emerges from those conversations is an empathy for Mrs. Sheehan's suffering but a fundamental disagreement with her politics. xxx Ann and Dale Hampton lost their only child, Capt. Kimberly Hampton, on Jan. 2, 2004, while she was flying her Kiowa helicopter. She was a member of the 82nd Airborne and the company commander. She had already served in Afghanistan before being deployed to Iraq. Ann Hampton wrote, "My grief sometimes seems unbearable, but I cannot add the additional baggage of anger. Mrs. Sheehan has every right to protest . . . but I cannot do that. I would be protesting the very thing that Kimberly believed in and died for." xxx Marine Capt. Benjamin Sammis was Stacey Sammis's husband. Ben died on April 4, 2003, while flying his Super Cobra helicopter. Listen to Stacey and she will tell you that she is just beginning to understand the enormousness of the character of soldiers who knowingly put their lives at risk to defend our country. She will tell you that one of her deepest regrets is that the world did not have the honor of experiencing for a much longer time this outstanding Marine she so deeply loved. xxx Speak to Joan Curtin, whose son, Cpl. Michael Curtin, was an infantryman with the 2-7th 3rd ID, and her words are passionately ambivalent. She says she has no room for bitterness. She has a life to lead and a family to nurture. She spoke of that part of her that never heals, for that is where Michael resides. She can go on, always knowing there will be that pain. xxx Karen Long is the mother of Spc. Zachariah Long, who died with my son Kyle on May 30, 2003. Zack and Kyle were inseparable friends as only soldiers can be, and Karen and I have become inseparable friends since their deaths. Karen's view is that what Mrs. Sheehan is doing she has every right to do, but she is dishonoring all soldiers, including Karen's son, Zack. Karen cannot comprehend why Mrs. Sheehan cannot seem to come to grips with the idea that her own son, Casey, was a soldier like Zack who had a mission to complete. Karen will tell you over and over again that Zack is not here and no one, but no one will dishonor her son. xxx My wife, Robin, has a different take on Mrs. Sheehan. She told me, "I don't care what she says or does. She is no more important than any other mother." xxx By all accounts Spc. Casey Sheehan, Mrs. Sheehan's son, was a soldier by choice and by the strength of his character. I did not have the honor of knowing him, but I have read that he attended community college for three years and then chose to join the Army. In August 2003, five months into Operation Iraqi Freedom and after three years of service, Casey Sheehan re-enlisted in the Army with the full knowledge there was a war going on, and with the high probability he would be assigned to a combat area. Mrs. Sheehan frequently speaks of her son in religious terms, even saying that she thought that some day Casey would be a priest. Like so many of the individuals who have given their lives in service to our country, Casey was a very special young man. How do you decry that which someone has chosen to do with his life? How does a mother dishonor the sacrifice of her own son? xxx Mrs. Sheehan has become the poster child for all the negativity surrounding the war in Iraq. In a way it heartens me to have all this attention paid to her, because that means others in her position now have the chance to be heard. Give equal time to other loved ones of fallen heroes. Feel the intensity of their love, their pride and the sorrow. xxx To many loved ones, there are few if any "what ifs." They, like their fallen heroes before them, live in the world as it is and not what it was or could have been. Think of the sacrifices that have brought us to this day. We as a country made a collective decision. We must now live up to our decision and not deviate until the mission is complete. xxxx Those who lost their lives believed in the mission. To honor their memory, and because it's right, we must believe in the mission, too. xxx We refuse to allow Cindy Sheehan to speak for all of us. Instead, we ask you to learn the individual stories. They are glorious. xxx Honor their memories. Honor their service. Never dishonor them by giving in. They never did.

Attic Knaves of The Day!

Once Again...The United Nations and Their Supporters From Hamas!
xxx
The United Nations bankrolled the production of thousands of banners, bumper stickers, mugs, and T-shirts bearing the slogan 'Today Gaza and Tomorrow the West Bank and Jerusalem,' which have been widely distributed to Palestinian Arabs in the Gaza Strip, according to a U.N. official.
xxx
The U.N. support of the Palestinian Authority's propaganda operation in the midst of the Israeli evacuation of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip has provoked outrage from Israeli and Jewish leaders, who are blaming Turtle Bay for propagating an inflammatory message that they say encourages Palestinian Arab violence.
xxx The Arabic slogan, which refers to disputed territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, has become ubiquitous in Gaza, where Israeli soldiers this week are evacuating 21 settlements. It's served as the central message of a Palestinian Arab effort to spin the withdrawal as a victory.
xxx
We suppose the U.N. will spend our money on new slogans such, 'Power to Hamas!'

Right's For All People or Wanting Both Ways?

Mission: The mission of Right's for All People (RAP) is to organize with immigrants and their allies to achieve justice, dignity and human rights for immigrants in Colorado.
xxx
Who Are They: Rights for All People was formed in response to the passage of anti-immigrant, anti-civil rights Proposition 187 in California. We are committed to struggle for the rights of immigrants. We believe the protection of immigrant rights is directly connected to preserving the rights of all people. Our primary strategy is to promote these rights and organize with immigrants in a broad-based advocacy coalition.
xxx
What They Really Want: "A strong library, a multi-lingual library, a strong reading public is going to foster democracy and that's exactly the kind of thing that we want to see in the public realm." ~Lisa Duran - Executive Director - RAP
xxx
Since when does having bi-lingual libraries at taxpayer expense qualify for justice and human dignity? Here is a naturalization eligibility requirement: Being able to speak, understand, read, and write simple English during the citizenship interview, unless you have a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from learning English. You may be exempt from this requirement if you are over the age of 50 and have been a permanent resident for over 20 years.
xxx
Tax dollars should not be used to enhance an immigrant's ability to skirt our immigration laws. In Colorado some people have an agenda to change the library system to accomodate Spanish speaking people. The issue of whether or not taxpayers should support a multi-lingual library system came to light when a local radio talk show host discovered that The Denver Public Library carried hundreds of graphic Spanish-language animated storybooks that depicted violent sex.
xxx
English is proclaimed by law as an official language in 27 of the 50 United States. English is the primary language of the United States. The United States does not have an official language at federal level; nevertheless, English is the first and/or only language of the overwhelming majority of the population and serves as the de facto official language: English is the language used for legislation, regulations, executive orders, treaties, federal court rulings, and all other official pronouncements. Speaking English should be encouraged by establishing curriculum which helps the naturalization process to move forward for Spanish speaking immigrants. It's part of attaining citizenship.

All In The Family...At The United Nations

The U.N. Family Tree:

  • Oil for Food was established in 1995: Egyptian diplomat Boutros Boutros-Ghali was U.N. Secretary General.
  • Geneva-based oil trading firm called AMEP (received Oil-For-Food Profits) run Fakhry Abdelnour, Mr. Boutros-Ghali's cousin.
  • AMEP board member Efraim Nadler, is Mr. Boutros-Ghali's brother-in-law and close friend to Benon Sevan, the former executive director of the Oil for Food program.
  • Kobina Annan, Ghana's ambassador to Morocco and the Secretary General Kofi Annan's brother, is being investigated in connection with business dealings he had with Michael Wilson.
  • Mr. Wilson is an Annan-family friend and former executive at the Geneva-based company Cotecna, which in December 1998 was improperly awarded a lucrative Oil for Food contract.
  • Cotecna employed Mr. Annan's son Kojo, whom it eventually paid as much as $484,000, largely in disguised deposits after he had left the company.
  • Maurice Strong, a Canadian businessman who resigned as a U.N. undersecretary general last month when it emerged that he'd given his stepdaughter a U.N. job.
  • Alexander Yakovlev. The former U.N. procurement officer, arrested last week for taking $1 million in bribes, had already been dismissed for arranging a job for his son with a U.N. contractor.

Stay tuned, this family tree has a larger root system then a 100 year old maple tree.

Study Shows Democrat's Mentally Ill

A new study by Harvard University and the National Institute of Mental Health claims that 46 percent of all Americans will, at some point in their lives, develop a mental disorder. Hmmm...Looking at the last Presidential election we'd say the results are already in and closer to 48%.

Cindy Sheehan..Unhinged Well Before Crawford!

"I was raised in a country by a public school system that taught us that America was good, that America was just. America has been killing people since we first stepped on this continent, we have been responsible for death and destruction. I passed on that bullshit to my son and my son enlisted.
xx
I'm going all over the country telling moms: 'This country is not worth dying for.' If we're attacked, we would all go out. We'd all take whatever we had. I'd take my rolling pin and I'd beat the attackers over the head with it. But we were not attacked by Iraq. We might not even have been attacked by Osama bin Laden if 9/11 was their Pearl Harbor to get their neo-con agenda through and, if I would have known that before my son was killed, I would have taken him to Canada. I would never have let him go and try and defend this morally repugnant system we have. The people are good, the system is morally repugnant.
xxx What they're saying, too, is like, it's okay for Israel to have nuclear weapons. But Iran or Syria better not get nuclear weapons. It's okay for the United States to have nuclear weapons. It's okay for the countries that we say it's okay for. We are waging a nuclear war in Iraq right now. That country is contaminated. It will be contaminated for practically eternity now. It's okay for them to have them, but Iran or Syria can't have them. It's okay for Israel to occupy Palestine, but it's--yeah--and it's okay for Iraq to occupy--I mean, for the United States to occupy Iraq, but it's not okay for Syria to be in Lebanon."

San Francisco State Rally - April 2005

Ms. Sheehan is no longer simply a grieving mother. She has alienated herself from her family and has become a tool for the press. Sheehan made her comments in April at a rally in support of Lynne Stewart, a civil right's lawyer convicted on five counts of providing material aid to terrorists. The jurors in Ms. Stewarts trial were persuaded that she had crossed a professional line, from vigorously representing her client to conspiring in his followers' plans to launch violence in Egypt.

CBS Sports and ESPN!
English accented announcer during the suspended final round of the PGA Championship referring to the gallery of fans. xxx "It's no wonder so many people showed up today...er uh...maybe they could see a play off...er....with Tiger Woods."

ESPN, forever in love with only Tiger, lead off it's pathetic "Sports Center" showing Tiger chipping in from the rough. This happened yesterday! Today, Phil Mickleson won the PGA Tournment. Where the hell was this in the lead film clip and story???

With so many other fine golfers and a three-way tie for first, with two holes to be played, these idiots are continuously promoting Woods. Who in the hell cares about Wood's already? CBS and the whole sports world constantly show total disrespect for the other professional golfers. I wrote about this below and the Woods B.S. continues. This is disrespectful to the sport of golf and demeaning of the golfers still playing today. It's not the Woods Championship. In fact, he has been eliminated. Say good-bye Tiger! Nah, Hah...Hey, Hey...Good-Bye!

Congratulations to Phil Mickleson

Could This Depict Hollywood?

Fangs of Malice: Hypocrisy, Sincerity, and Acting (Studies in Theatre History and Culture) by Mathew H. Wikander. Here is the book description at Amazon.

The idea that actors are hypocrites and fakes and therefore dangerous to society was widespread in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Fangs of Malice examines the equation between the vice of hypocrisy and the craft of acting as it appears in antitheatrical tracts, in popular and high culture, and especially in plays of the period. Rousseau and others argue that actors, expert at seeming other than they are, pose a threat to society; yet dissembling seems also to be an inevitable consequence of human social intercourse. The “antitheatrical prejudice” offers a unique perspective on the high value that modern western culture places on sincerity, on being true to one's own self.
xxx Taking a cue from the antitheatrical critics themselves, Matthew Wikander structures his book in acts and scenes, each based on a particular slander against actors. A prologue introduces his main issues. Act One deals with the proposition “They Dress Up”: foppish slavery to fashion, cross-dressing, and dressing as clergy. Act Two treats the proposition “They Lie” by focusing on social dissembling and the phenomenon of the self-deceiving hypocrite and the public, princely hypocrite. Act Three, “They Drink,” examines a wide range of antisocial behavior ascribed to actors, such as drinking, gambling, and whoring. An epilogue ties the ancient ideas of possession and the panic that actors inspire to contemporary anxieties about representation not only in theatre but also in the visual and literary arts.

Hmmm.....Sounds alot like Michael Moore et al!

Bear Birth Control???

New Jersey's black bear population has rocketed to some 3,400, and bears have been spotted in every one of the state's 21 counties. In the first half of this year alone, the state logged 677 damage and nuisance complaints, up from 424 in the same period last year. Bears have attacked dogs, swatted toddlers, and broken into houses. The state's Fish & Game Council voted unanimously to hold a bear hunt in December, noting that hunts are the most effective way to control population. At least 27 bear-populated states currently permit hunting, and New Jersey itself had a successful hunt in 2003. Standing in the way of the hunt is state environmental commissioner Bradley Campbell, who seems more interested in pleasing animal rights groups than in the well-being of his state's citizens. After the Fish & Game Council approved a hunt last year, Mr. Campbell stepped in to block it, arguing instead for an expensive contraception program and a "public awareness" campaign. The Wall Street Journal suggests Campbell will consider passing out bear condoms, too.

It's The Professional Golfers Association...Stupid!

I am sooooooooooo sick of the press, and I mean everyone in the press, displaying their kool-aid drinking attitude towards Tiger Woods. I grew up when golf was not as popular, when I was one of very few kids on the golf course with senior citizens. My game started at age six with some old Bobby Jones wood shaft clubs and a dirty bag. No lessons, just pay your tiny fee and play. My parents always new where I was, either playing sandlot baseball or golf. I was obsessed and went on to play in high school and in the Big-Ten. The hope for me was to qualify for the PGA but I got drafted and the dream ended. However, my respect for the game of golf, the legends, the ghost of Bobby Jones and the immense difficulty of the sport never waned. As the game became increasingly popular I stayed away from the course with an occasional trip to the driving range. There are too many amateurs and wanna-be's who don't know the rules or etiquette so important to golf. The game slowed down and became a chore. Now watching golf has become a chore. Actually the headlines and TV commercials have become advertisement for what is presumed a "one-man show." Tiger this, Tiger that. Today Tiger Woods is 8 strokes off the lead held by Phil Mickleson. What is the Associated Press headline? Tiger back to par! PAR???? Eight strokes behind in one of the "Big 4" Tournaments and Woods get the headline? Incredible and pathetic. There are approximately 150 professional golfers in tournaments who practice hours upon hours. Commercials for tournaments usually say something about the defending champion. Or should I say, use too! Now it's all about Tiger! No respect for previous champions, no respect for current leaders. It's all about Tiger! Everyone loves a hero, the champion. Tiger Woods has had an illustrious career although in the beginning his father had to be shown the rule book on who belongs in the club house or on the green. Daddy thought he was the part of the show, part of his son's celebrity. And Tiger... pumping fist....immense arrogance...a real son of a bitch frankly. No Class, no respect for the game, no respect for other golfers. It's all about me...Tiger Woods. The press continues to shine the light upon Tiger even though his game has lost much of it's luster. They don't shine the light on the Tiger swearing and slamming his clubs. They don't write about the Tiger who receives penalties at a record pace for displays of temper and unsportsmanlike conduct. When another golfer, yes one of 150+ competing, is the champion of a tournament, the television stations end Sunday with clips of Tiger even though there is another winner. It's all about Tiger. I have been a Chicago Cub fan all my life. (Grrrr). We like to say, "I root for the Cubs and whoever is playing the White Sox. In golf I root for whomever is playing in the tournament, excluding Tiger Woods. For me it's not all about Tiger, it's all about the most difficult sport in the world. Yes, the sport and all the competitors who work endlessly with hopes of finishing in the money and maybe winning a "Big 4" championship. I tip my hat to all the golfers of the Professional Golfer's Association. This PGA Tournament is all about YOU!

Attic Knave of The Day!

"the cowardly character trait of a President who refuses to meet with anyone or any group critical of his illegal, fabricated, deceptive war and occupation of that ravaged country. As a messianic militarist, Mr. Bush turned aside his own father's major advisers who warned him of the terroristic, political, and diplomatic perils to the United States from an invasion of Iraq. He refused to listen."
~Ralph Nader
xxx
Let's not forget Mr. Bush turned away the weak French and German governments who don't have the stomach to fight terrorism until the bombs reach their homelands. Nader the "Progressive" would also like European and U.N. permission to defend America. How about we restart the Vietnam Era, "Paris Peace Talks" with Bin Laden. They argued for years on the shape of the conference table and then the seating arrangment.

Terrorism In The Clinton Administration!

“Ms. Gorelick has been among the most partisan and aggressive Democratic panel members in questioning the anti-terror efforts of the Bush administration. The nation deserves a full accounting from Ms. Gorelick of why the Clinton administration felt it necessary to go the extra mile in order to hamper the capability of law enforcement and intelligence agents to talk to one another. If Ms. Gorelick fails to provide this, her actions would bring into serious doubt the credibility of the commission.”
xxx
The above quote is from the Washington Times. Not today, not yesterday, but in April of 2004! But it is clearly Ms. Gorelick’s memo, and the Clinton Administration’s scrupulosity regarding information sharing and the “civil rights” of terror-suspects, that played the key role in preventing information from being passed to the appropriate agencies prior to the 9/11 attacks. Had “Able Danger” been allowed to pass along its information to the FBI—within the limits of the laws restricting communication between counter-terrorism agents and federal prosecutors, 9/11 may well have been prevented. Given that it has now come to light that “Able Danger” was prevented from passing its information to the FBI and that this information was provided to Sept. 11 Commission members who then did not inform the Commission prior to its publishing its final report, one wonders just who those staffers were and to whom they reported. Indeed, if Representative Weldon is serious about calling for a formal inquiry in Congress after the August recess, we would suggest that the top of the witness list include Ms. Gorelick and her Sept. 11 Commission staff members. Specifically, we would like to know what Ms. Gorelick knew and when she knew it. The Clinton administration has been given a pass for too long. The 9/11 Commission was set up to be bi-partisan fact finding group. It was nothing more than the fox guarding the chicken coop, busy covering for the incompetence within the Clinton Whitehouse.

Attic Quote of The Day!

"The 9/11 commission staff received not one but two briefings on Able Danger from former team members, yet did not pursue the matter.
The commission's refusal to investigate Able Danger after being notified of its existence, and its recent efforts to feign ignorance of the project while blaming others for supposedly withholding information on it, brings shame on the commissioners, and is evocative of the worst tendencies in the federal government that the commission worked to expose."

NARAL Runs Amuck...Again!

Abortion-rights group, NARAL Pro-Choice America, is running an attack ad accusing Supreme Court nominee John Roberts of filing legal papers “supporting . . . a convicted clinic bomber” and of having an ideology that “leads him to excuse violence against other Americans” It shows images of a bombed clinic in Birmingham , Alabama. The ad is false.
The ad misleads when it says Roberts supported a clinic bomber. It is true that Roberts sided with the bomber and many other defendants in a civil case, but the case didn't deal with bombing at all. Roberts argued that abortion clinics who brought the suit had no right use an 1871 federal anti-discrimination statute against anti-abortion protesters who tried to blockade clinics. Eventually a 6-3 majority of the Supreme Court agreed, too. Roberts argued that blockades were already illegal under state law.
The images used in the ad are especially misleading. The pictures are of a clinic bombing that happened nearly seven years after Roberts signed the legal brief in question.

Kansas Board of Education...Unintelligent by Design

After months of debate over science and religion, the Kansas Board of Education has tentatively approved new state science standards that weaken the role evolution plays in teaching about the origin of life. The 10-member board must still take a final vote, expected in either September or October, but a 6-4 vote on Tuesday that approved a draft of the standards essentially cemented a victory for conservative Christian board members who say evolution is largely unproven and can undermine religious teachings about the origins of life on earth. "We think this is a great development ... for the academic freedom of students," said John West, senior fellow of the Discovery Institute, which supports intelligent design theory. So much for open-minded debate in our public schools. This small groups thinks its belief system is correct and Darwin Theory is bunk. They claim evolution is largely unproven, but they can't prove otherwise. Nor can they prove "Intelligent Design." Hello George Orwell! By closing down debate and discussion West exclaims this as "development" and "academic freedom of students." Since when is censorship academic freedom?
While the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection has observable and repeatable facts to support it such as the process of mutations, gene flow, genetic drift, adaptation and speciation through natural selection, the "Intelligent Designer" in ID is neither observable nor repeatable. This violates the scientific requirement of falsifiability. ID violates Occam's Razor by postulating an entity or entities to explain something that may have a simpler and scientifically supportable explanation not involving unobservable help.
Although Intelligent Design may have been born out of opposition to the theory of evolution, it apparently does not oppose the concept of evolution as a mechanism for directed, intelligent creation, nor even for limited, apparently undirected natural change. Ostensibly its main purpose is to investigate whether or not there is empirical evidence that life on Earth was designed by an intelligent agent or agents. Why does the Kansas Board of Education wish to completely eliminate discussion on evolution from scientific study? Why isn't the public up in arms over this?
xxx
Phillip E. Johnson, considered the father of the intelligent design movement and its unofficial spokesman stated that the goal of intelligent design is to cast creationism as a scientific concept:
xxx
"Our strategy has been to change the subject a bit so that we can get the issue of intelligent design, which really means the reality of God, before the academic world and into the schools. This isn't really, and never has been a debate about science. It's about religion and philosophy."
xxx
The Kansas Board of Education seems to think censoring discussion on evolution is the real goal. Removing evolution from science curriculum is bad enough but they are voting to bring religion into the public school system as a formal discussion or educational discipline. It seems church and state are on a collision course in Kansas and the school system has been taken over by OZ!

Washington State Unhinged!

The Washington State Personnel System Reform Act of 2002 allows public-sector unions to negotiate wage and hour guidelines for employees. The governor’s office and representatives of nearly twenty public-sector unions negotiated the first collective bargaining agreements in 2004. Governor Gregoire’s newly-released budget funds these agreements. This is the Governor who won election in a hotly contested battle in which illegal voting occurred which put her over the top after she initially lost. The contracts include a mechanism known as a “union security clause,” which requires all employees of a bargaining unit to pay for union representation, regardless of whether they actually become members. Dues are set at 1.37 percent of an employee’s salary, up to about $55 dollars a month. Those who do not wish to join the union will still be required to pay a “fair share” fee equal to the normal dues amount. Employees who refuse to authorize the dues deduction from their paycheck will face termination, as indicated in the contract negotiated by the union. The Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) downplays the reality of the mandatory dues scheme. In a flyer passed out to state employees, the WFSE insists that employees who do not pay union dues will be “asked to contribute” the fair share fee. The flyer fails to mention that employees who decline will be terminated at the union’s demand. The Federation made more than $280,000 in cash contributions in the 2004 elections, and many state workers do not want to be forced to support a particular political agenda in order to keep their jobs. A whopping 75% of their contributions went to elect Gregoire!

Impeachment Was Not Enough!

Ok, forget politics and covering everyones backside. It's time to get tough on the Clinton's and his entire inept administration. These people were sitting back allowing terrorists to grow their profession, to plan, to immigrate and use our freedoms and rights to kill us. Period. Blame game hell. IT'S THE CLINTON'S STUPID! And....Liberal thinking along with it.
Recent findings of Rep. Curt Weldon, a Pennsylvania Republican who serves as vice chairman of the House Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, made front-page news. In June, Weldon displayed charts on the floor of the U.S. Senate showing that a classified military intelligence unit known as "Able Danger" identified the men in 1999. That unit repeatedly asked for the information to be forwarded to the FBI but apparently to no avail. Various news outlets picked up on the story this week.
Weldon has stated that staff members of the Sept. 11 commission were briefed at least once by officials with Able Danger but that he does not believe the message was sent to the commissioners themselves. He also said some phone calls made by military officials with Able Danger to the commission staff went unreturned.
xxx
Weldon said that in September 2000, Able Danger recommended on three separate occasions that its information on the hijackers be given to the FBI "so they could bring that cell in and take out the terrorists." However, Weldon said Pentagon lawyers rejected the recommendation because they said Atta and the others were in the country legally, so information on them could not be shared with law enforcement.
"Lawyers within the administration — and we're talking about the Clinton administration, not the Bush administration ... said 'you can't do it,' and put post-its over Atta's face," Weldon said. "They said they were concerned about the political fallout that occurred after Waco ... and the Branch Davidians."
xxx
Let's keep in mind that Hillary thinks in this "politically correct" fashion. Can't hurt a terrorists feelings, or any world leaders. It's easier to go after anti-government, home-grown nuts in Waco or Ruby Ridge.

"This is just the kind of fight that Sen. Clinton would have hoped to avoid. Jeanine Pirro is pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-affirmative action, pro-gay-civil unions and pro-immigration. And, of course, she's a woman.
xxx Hillary would love to cloak her Senate re-election as a necessity in the face of a determined GOP effort to overturn Roe vs. Wade and to roll back the clock on gun controls. But against Pirro, she will be disarmed of all her best issues. She will have to run on her own record, which is limited at best."

"The U.N.'s defenders like to paint Oil for Food as a great humanitarian effort slightly tarnished by a few overhyped instances of corruption. In fact, Oil for Food was a huge field of graft, helped by the fact that the man in charge of policing it was, based on the evidence Mr. Volcker has collected, in the service of the bad guys. Mr. Annan might think of this as yet another opportunity for 'reform.' If he's even remotely serious on that score, he can begin by reflecting a little harder on his own responsibility for the failures over which he, and nobody else, presided."

Attics Answer To Nagasaki Mayor

Nagasaki Mayor Iccho Itoh had some angry words for the leaders of the nuclear powers, and especially the United States after remembering the moment 60 years ago when an American plane dropped a plutonium bomb, killing tens of thousands and sealing Japan's defeat in World War II . "To the citizens of the United States of America: We understand your anger and anxiety over the memories of the horror of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Yet, is your security enhanced by your government's policies of maintaining 10,000 nuclear weapons." Mr. Mayor...We remember December 7, 1941 and Pearl Harbor. We remember the brutal treatment of our POW's. Yes, Mr. Mayor, we too remember. If you're a peace loving nation you can avoid the atomic bomb.

Attic Knave(s) of The Day!

"Hitler had a lot of Jews high up in the hierarchy of the Third Reich. Color does not necessarily denote quality, content or value. If a black is a tyrant, he is first and foremost a tyrant, then he incidentally is black. Bush is a tyrant and if he gathers around him black tyrants, they all have to be treated as they are being treated."

Harry sure isn't aging gracefully.

"They (black conservatives) have a right to exist, but why would I want to walk around with a swastika on my shirt after the way Hitler done messed it (the swastika symbol) up? So why would I want to call myself a conservative after the way them white racists thugs have used that word to hide behind? They call themselves new Republicans."

The next time Mr. Gregory goes on a hunger strike we could only hope he stays on it until the end. We do mean the end!
