Attic Quote of The Day!

"Yeah. Well, let's see, you got Kennedy. I will — I'll not take instruction from Teddy Kennedy. A young woman likely drowned because of his negligence. I'll take no moral instruction with him. That's much worse than legal gambling what Teddy Kennedy did. He should make no judgments at all about people. He shouldn't be in the Senate. As far as racist and all this other stuff, I'll put my record up with Howard Dean, with Harry Reid."

The U.N. Leadership...History of the Absurd

We have watched the United Nations evolve into a group of corrupt bureaucrats who have mismanaged the organization, empowered countries who flunk the human rights test and have done business with murderous dictators while filling their own bank accounts with U.S. dollars.
xxx
Kofi Annan should step down, won't and nobody is calling for his ouster. Should we be surprised when Kurt Waldheim, the fourth U.N. Secretary General, has a resume that is sketchy at best? Mr. Waldheim, had a five-year term beginning on January 1, 1972 as Secretary General. At the U.N. web site Mr. Waldheim's resume skips some important years which we are inclined to fill in.
xxx
Outside of Waldheim's birthdate of 1918, the next year shown is 1944, when he graduated with a law degree from the University of Vienna. However, some interesting points are missing so we are inclined to print them here.
xxx
  • Mr. Waldheim's involvement with Nazi organizations began in 1938 shortly after the German-Austrian Anschluss, when he enrolled in the Nazi student union of Vienna's Consular Academy.
  • Later that year, Mr. Waldheim enlisted in a mounted unit of the Sturm Abteilung, or SA, the paramilitary brownshirts founded by Adolf Hitler.
  • In 1942, Mr. Waldheim returned to duty as an intelligence officer with the Wehrmacht's Army Group E, which at one point deployed some 400,000 troops throughout the Balkans and in Greece.
  • Mr. Waldheim was named a war criminal by the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal on charges of "murder, slaughter, shooting of hostages and ravaging of property by burning of settlements."
  • In 1947, the United Nations War Crimes Commission listed Mr. Waldheim as a class A suspect because it believed there was clear evidence establishing his guilt.
  • Since 1986, Mr. Waldheim's name has been on a U.S. government watch list of suspected war criminals and he is banned from traveling here.
  • Mr. Waldheim served as President of Austria from 1986-1982

Throughout his term as President, Waldheim and his wife, Elisabeth, were deemed personae non-gratae by many countries. In six years Waldheim made almost no state visits, notable exceptions being Vatican City. As the Attic has printed before, the Vatican has a sordid history of providing a blind eye toward the holocaust, but doesn't object to visits with war criminals and anti-Semites.

Anyone who can substantiate why the United Nations should exist without massive organizational reforms please let us know.

Attic Quote of The Day!

"Hurricane Katrina temporarily blew away the screens that we have erected to keep the underclass out of sight and out of mind. We are now to be treated to a flurry of government efforts from politicians who are shocked, shocked, by what they saw.
xxx
What comes next is depressingly predictable. Five years from now, the official evaluations will report that there were no statistically significant differences between the subsequent lives of people who got the government help and the lives of people in a control group. Newspapers will not carry that story, because no one will be interested any longer. No one will be interested because we will have long since replaced the screens, and long since forgotten."

Ronnie Earle...A History of Abuse and Power

"This morning, in an act of blatant political partisanship, a rogue district attorney in Travis County, Texas named Ronnie Earle charged me with one count of criminal conspiracy, a reckless charge wholly unsupported by the facts. xxx It is a sham, and Mr. Earle knows it. It is a charge that can not hold up even under the most glancing scrutiny. This act is the product personal revenge for the role I played in the Texas Republican legislative campaign in 2002 and my advocacy for a new, fair and constitutional congressional map for our state in 2003." xxx ~Tom Delay Representative (R-Texas)

Louisiana Purchase...Hold On to Your Wallet!

Let's take a look at the "Mad-Hatters" from Louisiana and their "Wish-List". The stench is percolating coast to coast and north to south!
  • Louisiana's congressional delegation has requested $40 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, about 10 times the annual Corps budget for the entire nation, or 16 times the amount the Corps has said it would need to protect New Orleans from a Category 5 hurricane.
  • $31.7 billion in federal funds for her state's infrastructure, including $20 billion for hurricane protections -- which aides described as a down payment on the larger sum..
  • A study of several key flood-protection projects, as well as a $14 billion ecosystem restoration for Louisiana's vanishing coastal marshes.
  • A 50-year-old plan for a $750 million lock for the New Orleans Industrial Canal.
  • $50 billion in open-ended grants for storm-ravaged communities.
  • $13 billion for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, along with mortgage assistance, health care, substance abuse treatment and other services for hurricane victims.
  • $8 million for alligator farms.
  • $35 million for seafood industry marketing.
  • $25 million for a sugar-cane research laboratory that had not been completed before Katrina.

Here's the kicker --->>>The bill would create a powerful "Pelican Commission" controlled by Louisiana residents that would decide which Corps projects to fund, and ordered the commission to consider several controversial navigation projects that have nothing to do with flood protection.

The Corps section of the Louisiana bill, which was supported by the entire state delegation, was based on recommendations from a "working group" dominated by lobbyists for ports, shipping firms, energy companies and other corporate interests.

The Attic would feel much safer if the "Pelicans" were in charge, unfortunately we have two-legged alligators frothing at the mouth over federal money these people believe is their financial piggy bank. Doing the math we're still looking for $33 Billion.

Attic Quote of The Day!

"I very strongly personally regret that I was unable to persuade Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin to sit down, get over their differences, and work together. I just couldn't pull that off. My biggest mistake was not recognizing by Saturday that Louisiana was dysfunctional."
xxx
~Mike Brown
Former FEMA Director
xxx
The Attic has repeatedly defended Mr. Brown. The embattled former director of FEMA became the scape goat while the control hungry, incompetent Nagin and Blanco fought over power. So greedy over control they failed to take advice or let in much need support, food, water and medical assistance. It was all there, they refused to accept it.

Bill O'Reilly MIS-Reports, You Decide

I accidentally turned Bill O'Reilly on Fox last evening and he had Tim Green, the host of "A Current Affair", touting how they ran down Joran Van der Sloot from Aruba in the Netherlands, as if this was news. xxx What stunned me was Fox reported Van der Sloot was leaving Aruba to attend college in the Netherlands with permission from the government in early September. xxx Why is O'Reilly and "A Current Affair" acting like this just happened? Are these clowns of tabloid journalism so desperate for a story or simply acting as though they are "breaking news?" xxx Welcome to Bill O'Reilly's "Spin Zone". All the Spin, All the Time, All Egomaniac Bill O'Reilly. What gives O'Reilly the authority to hold court on his program, making assumptions and judgements without complete facts? This isn't journalism, it's slander!

Katrina Fallout...Sorting Out Responsibility

It has been several weeks since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama. Everyone from local officials, the media, Cindy Sheehan and her left-wing nut pals has taken shots at President Bush. The head of FEMA resigned from undue pressure and influence while the blame game was played out in the media. xxx As time passes responsibility and truth will be sorted out, it's beginning already with the suggestion of dumping billions and billions of dollars into Louisiana, a state with a political history of corrupt politicians, graft and wasting taxpayer dollars. xxx Joel Kotkin, author of "The City: A Global History" writes, "The huge discrepancy between the Texas and Louisiana responses should call into question the assumptions that have been trumpeted since Katrina. Foremost, we need to reconsider the central focus on the role of the federal government. Historically, the first responders in a crisis have been local officials, the province being more one of mayors and governors than presidents." xxx "Federal taxpayers should insist that funds be designated for long-term investments toward both infrastructure and preparation. Currently, there is a great danger that much of the money may be used to underwrite massive real estate speculation and a famously corrupt political culture." xxx Taxpayers should demand more from elected officials who wish to throw our money at someone else's problem. It's not the responsibility of the Federal government to be first responders, it's not the responsibility of the nations taxpayers to pay for inept state and local politicians mistakes. President Bush is now taking the lead to correct years of corrupt Louisiana political chaos, racial prejudice and complete lack of leadership but tossing money to Louisiana is like putting a band-aid on an open chest wound and strict guidelines must be put in place and adhered to.
xxx
Mr. Bush needs to take on a bigger leadership role by using his veto power to curb the out of control spending by congress. In addition, the President needs to use his power to rescind funds authorized by Congress. The House Rules Committee defines this "rescission" power as "a law that repeals previously enacted budget authority in whole or in part. Under the Impoundment Control Act of 1974, the President can impound such funds by sending a message to Congress requesting one or more rescissions and the reasons for doing so."
xxx Elected officials like Nagin and Blanco need to be monitored and held directly accountable for every federal dime spent or else face impeachment and jail. The U.S. taxpayer should demand complete adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strict auditing procedures should be in place. We cannot expect honesty from politicians who won't take advice, play partisan politics during a crisis and evacuate themselves while citizens are left behind to suffer and die.

Attic Knave of The Day!

Senator Evan Bayh (D-Indiana)
xxx
A long-time moderate from a Red-State, who introduced fellow Hoosier Judge Roberts to the Judiciary Committee, is voting "Nay".
xxx
"So much essential to reaching a considered judgment about this nominee remains unknown," Bayh said in a statement. "And that is not enough for a lifetime appointment to our nation's highest court, a court from which there is no appeal, a court that is the ultimate arbiter of our most basic rights and freedoms.
xxx
As a former Hoosier and participant of Bayh's Small Business Forums, I am sadly disappointed in this position. Hypocrisy in politics never ceases to amaze me. This is the only Democrat I ever voted for, because of his stance for small business, conservative fiscal positions and support of our military.

Three Stooges Appear Live in Washington D.C.

Yes, we saw George Galloway, Jesse Jackson and the star of the show, Cindy Sheehan in the slap-stick comedy, "How Pathetic Are We?" xxx Left-Wing Nut Sheehan complained this weekend that cable news networks were paying more attention to Hurricane Rita than to her anti-war rally in Washington D.C., posting a message on the far left web site DailyKos, "I am watching CNN (Communist News Network) and it is 100 percent Rita...even though it is a little wind and a little rain...it is bad, but there are other things going on in the country today...and in the world!!!!" (Like you Cindy?)
xxx
Sheehan must have gotten under the skin of some left-wing readers. One responded, "Shame on you, you're jealous of media coverage of other's suffering." Another wrote, "The right-wing media has painted you as a self-centered, self-absorbed woman and you're living up to that image." Isn't Cindy the hypocrite. At her rally she was chanting, "Build levees, not war," while she complains about too much coverage on hurricane disasters. xxx In the mean time, while dunce Sheehan was getting arrested for being disobedient, U.S. Special Forces killed Al Qaeda's No. 2 terror mastermind Abu Azzam, who was believed to have been in charge of financing terrorist cells in Iraq. So much for the D.C. protest as U.S. Troops continue to fight the war on terror and take out al-Qaeda leadership.

Hamas Needs To Be Crushed Now!

With only one side participating in the "Roadmap to Peace" between Palestine and Israel it seems lack of Palestinian leadership and the terror group Hamas leaves the Israeli government with one option. Destroy Hamas, no questions asked!
xxx
The headlines and story from Associated Press seem to indicate Israel is attacking the Gaza strip without explaining Israel was hit by 39 rockets. If Palestine can't work towards peace then Israel must defend itself aggressively. Terrorist groups by any name must be annihilated so they cannot reconstitute themselves.
xxx
The feckless and anti-Semitic U.N. should be denouncing this latest attack but are too busy spending U.S. tax dollars and ignoring peace accords and human rights. In addition, where are other countries, including Europe, denouncing Palestinian terrorism?

FOX MIS-Reports, You Decide

Headlines on the lips of anchor people and the FoxNews.com website state two (2) New Orleans levees were "breached."
xxx
First of all the 82nd Airborned apparently mis-spoke using the term "breached" and was corrected live on Fox by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps explained a breach and said the water was "over the top", not a breach and the structure did not have a gaping hole or portion missing. That didn't stop Fox to continue using the term "breach."
xxx
Moving to the article, it contradicts its headline. Hurricane Rita's wind-driven storm surge topped one of New Orleans' battered levees and poked holes in another Friday, sending water gushing into already-devastated neighborhoods just days after they had been pumped dry. An initial surge of water cascaded over a patched levee protecting the impoverished Ninth Ward. (key words, "topped" and "cascaded over.")
xxx
The insistence of news personnel to misquote and inaccurately describe the professionals is a huge disservice to the public and provides false information to the politicians who wish to find blame. While Fox spent a great deal of time defending Geraldo Riviera against the N.Y. Times (another media outlet full of lies) it doesn't want to practice what is preaches.
xxx
Fox was too busy sending reporters and anchors to hurricane areas to stand in the wind and rain and tell us the obvious. What endless coverage of the seashore provides while the war on terror continues and other important stories exist is beyond me.

Catholic Officials Condone Their Own Terrorism

A three-year grand jury investigation of the Philadelphia Archdiocese, the longest known inquiry in the national clergy sex abuse crisis, ended Wednesday with scathing allegations that cardinals and other churchmen had conspired to protect offenders.
xxx
The grand jury said it could bring no indictments because of time limits on prosecuting the claims and because the Catholic archdiocese is not a corporation under state law. Only one priest in the archdiocese has been indicted.
xxx
Here's the kicker. The archdiocese responded with its own equally sharp-worded report, calling the grand jury's conclusions "discriminatory" and "sensationalized," and accusing investigators of "bullying" former Cardinal Joseph Bevilacqua during his 10 appearances as a witness.
xxx
The two men knew that priests were molesting children but conducted bogus "non-investigations" designed to avoid uncovering abuse, while they and aides transferred known abusers among parishes, the grand jury said.
xxx
The 418-page report names 63 priests "whose abusive behavior was well-documented in archdiocesan files and by witnesses who testified" before the panel. All had multiple victims, and many more abusers certainly exist, the grand jury said.
xxx The examples of abuse cited in the report included an 11-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and impregnated by a priest, who took her for an abortion, and a priest who falsely told a 12-year-old boy that the child's mother knew he was being raped repeatedly and allowed it.
xxx
"The evidence is clear. This reaches the top -- the very top of our archdiocese," Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham said Wednesday at a news conference. "Regrettably, the perpetrators of these crimes and the people that protected them will never face the penalties they deserve."
xxx
The archdiocese rebuttal continues in an accusatory, unrepentant manner somehow defending itself of atrocities instead of cleaning up its house of horrors. The archdiocese said in its rebuttal that the grand jury report was "a vile, mean-spirited diatribe" that was "reminiscent of the days of rampant Know-Nothingism in the 1840s" -- a time of strong anti-Catholic sentiment.
xxx "The original intent behind the grand jury concept was to shield against abuses of power," the archdiocese said. "In this case, the grand jury was used as a sword to attack the church and build support for insidious pre-judgments."
xxx
This is nothing less than outrageous, with the Catholic Church all the way up to the Vatican protecting these terrorists of children, while making excuses for itself by accusing the victims. Laws should be changed so these professional pedophiles are no longer protected by their own condoning religious authorities and will face their victims and long terms in hard-core prisons where they will receive their just desserts.

When Politicians Don't Understand Economics

We already know liberals never met a tax increase they didn't like, unless of course if it wasn't large enough. Now Republicans, not necessarily fiscally responsible conservatives, are in panic mode over the hurricane disasters. Unfortunately, politicians never think about financial planning for the country because they believe tax income is they political right and "fiscal planning" is a foreign term. xxx These people are not deep thinkers, and you would think they would have sound advice available about the merits of capitalism, free markets and how free economies work. Economic history is available and it's not that old. The Carter philosophy created gas lines and closed gas stations. Interest rates were competing with credit card rates and the Carter economy was a larger disaster than New Orleans. The effect was not only regional but also worldwide. Of course politicians don't think in terms of national implications let alone worldwide markets and the correlation of the two. xxx Currently some GOP Senators are suggesting a tax hike to pay for Katrina. Their targets are capital gains and dividends. Ohio's George Voinovich, New Hampshire's Judd Gregg and Maine's Olympia Snowe are three suspects and Bill Frist's chief budget aide, Bill Hoagland, is on record for suggesting this "option." xxx Something one cannot find in the main stream media or cable news is the fact that the budget deficit, with tax cuts, is actually being reduced at a much faster pace than expected because of the largest annual increase in federal revenues, even after inflation, in American history. Deficit spending under Ronald Reagan actually pulled the U.S. economy out of the Carter doldrums and over time created the marketplace the Clinton administration took credit for. In addition, the entrepreneurial spirit of the 1980's created businesses that flourished by the time Clinton took office. The economic seed was already planted and nourished. xxx Once again tax cuts have provided the U.S. economy with the stimulus to recover from the Clinton recession inherited in 2001. Free markets drive the economic engine via business investment and consumer spending. Jobs are created, and unemployment is reduced. Eager politicians, clueless about macro and microeconomics, feel the only way to increase revenues is through collecting taxpayers hard earned income. These intellectual midgets, elected on the false premise they are conservative, are more concerned with their political futures, not the U.S. economy. xxx Republicans have already proved they love pork as much as the liberals and don't have the political will to effectively stay the course of free market economics. We can only hope the President has the determination to stop these weasels in their tracks.

Surprise and No Surprise on Roberts Vote

Well, well.....Patrick Leahy announced he will vote for Judge Roberts confirmation as Supreme Court Chief Justice.
xxx
However, the clowns from Massachusetts, Kennedy and Kerry, are voting Nay! Seems on the merits that Roberts has earned an honorable living on his own, the Dishonorable Liberal Senators would give him that much credit. The two leftist Dem's are used to living off of someone else's income, i.e. Bootleg Cash, Money via Marriage and countries taxpayers.
xxx
Whereas Judge Roberts is known as someone who performed a great deal of Pro-Bono legal work, Kennedy and Kerry are known more as welfare recipients.

Attic Quote of The Day!

"It is a basic principle of Constitutional law that no Congress can mandate expenditures by a future one. And while the Stafford Act does suggest that temporary infrastructure repair after major disasters is a federal responsibility, it does not justify why 41 states should receive Katrina aid and it certainly doesn't relieve Republicans of their fiscal duty to identify offsetting cuts."

The Vatican
xx
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The chief prosecutor at the U.N. war crimes tribunal, Carla Del Ponte, accused the Vatican of hindering the hunt for a fugitive Croatian general.
xxx
In 2001, the U.N. war crimes tribunal indicted Gotovina for allegedly masterminding the 1995 killings of about 150 Serbs and the expulsions of at least 150,000 as part of a drive to purge Serbs from Croatia.
xxx
Del Ponte had sent letters to the Vatican and met with top church officials this summer requesting that the church reprimand Croatian Bishop Mile Bogovic. Bogovic publicly called Gotovina a hero and said his prosecution was politically motivated. Del Ponte's pleas went unanswered
xx
This is not the first time the Vatican has looked the other way at ethnic cleansing and genocide. How can we forget Pope Pious looking the other way while Jews were "cleansed" at the hands of the Nazi's. Of course the Vatican protects pedophiles too, so what I we expect from a bunch hiding behind their "religion" to hinder the weak and protect the criminals.

Message for Louisiana Politicians

Listen up Blanco, Nagin, et al.............That long thumb sticking out between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico called Florida has had seven (7) hurricanes of different categories in the last thirteen (13) months and three (3) this season. A quote from a very competent Governor Jeb Bush in both English and Spanish is this: "We have a plan, which we implement before, during and after a hurricane hits." That's the difference folks. No news from Tallhassee about corruption or FBI searches at this time. Just a plan, one that is actually implemented at all levels of state and local government. No police cars from Florida were seen parked in neighboring states! The Governor is still residing in Florida!

Mayor Nagin Weather Forecast

Mayor Ray Nagin, now well known incompetent and presumed mayor of New Orleans is issuing weather forecasts and warinings for Hurricane Rita. He feels the storm could be a problem. Really?? Does this clown still think he's in charge? Here's a song for the mayor.
Lovely Rita meter maid, lovely Rita meter maid
xx
Lovely Rita meter maid, nothing can come between us when it gets dark I tow your heart away Standing by a parking meter when I caught a glimpse of Rita Filling in the ticket in her little white book.
xx
I the cap she looked much older, And the bag across her shoulder made her look a little like a military man.
xx
Lovely Rita meter maid, may I inquire discreetly, When you are free to take some tea with me
xx
Took her out and tried to win her, Had a laugh and over dinner Told her I would really like to see her again
xx
Got the bill and Rita paid it, Took her home and nearly made it Sitting on a sofa with a sister or two.
xx
Oh, lovely Rita meter maid, where would I be without you, Give us a wink and make me think of you.
xx
Mr. Nagin, this is no meter maid, it's a progressive hurricane that may engulf New Orleans. You blame the Feds, insult the Feds, don't listen to the Feds...So who will you blame if another evacuation fails after inviting folks back too soon?
xxx
By the way...The military man in the song is really Thad Allen, your new boss!

Slick Willy is Back and Greasy As Ever!

Sticking a hot knife in the back of President Bush, impeached President Bill Clinton used the Sunday air-waves to stick it to a sitting President, something H.W. Bush refused to do although he had plenty of ammunition.
xx
In an interview on the ABC News program "This Week," former President Clinton told his former subordinate, George Stephanopoulos, that class divisions were to blame: "It's like when they issued the evacuation order. That affects poor people differently. A lot of them in New Orleans didn't have cars. A lot of them who had cars had kinfolk they had to take care of. They didn't have cars, so they couldn't take them out."
xx
"This is a matter of public policy. And whether it's race-based or not, if you give your tax cuts to the rich and hope everything works out all right, and poverty goes up and it disproportionately affects black and brown people, that's a consequence of the action made. That's what they did in the 80's; that's what they've done in this decade. In the middle, we had a different policy."
xx
"What Americans need to understand is that ... every single day of the year, our government goes into the market and borrows money from other countries to finance Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina, and our tax cuts."
xx
"We have never done this before. Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else."
xxx
"We depend on Japan, China, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Korea primarily to basically loan us money every day of the year to cover my tax cut and these conflicts and Katrina. I don't think it makes any sense."
xxx
Ahhhhhh, Three Dollar Bill Clinton, opportunist, back-stabber and liar. Let's take a look back at Mr. Clinton:
  • The man who skillfully resurrected his political career after he lost a gubernatorial reelection race by ostentatiously attending televised church services regularly in Arkansas carrying the biggest Bible he could find.
  • The man who shamelessly lied to the world about the sinful nature of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and pretended that he was in a state of grace by going to Holy Communion in a Roman Catholic Church in South Africa on a televised Palm Sunday service.
  • The man who was impeached, but not removed from office, because no Democrat Senator has ever voted to remove a fellow Democrat from the White House and there were enough Democrat Senators to preclude a two-thirds vote.
  • The man who made sure that the Ten Commandments were cast out of courthouses by appointing two secular extremists--Justices Ginsburg and Breyer--to cast the fourth and fifth votes for the purpose.
  • The man who is skillfully repackaging his wife Hillary as a moderate, so that they can retake the White House.

One thing for sure...President Bush always takes the high road, he take responsibility regardless of the partisans criticizing him and never taking responsibility for their liberal ineptness.

Americans should be thankful for one thing. If the Republicans had played politics during World War II the way the Clintons do during the War on Terror, Hitler, Hirohito and Mussolini might have written the history books.

The headline claims Ray Nagin, incompetent mayor of New Orleans, is suspending re-entry into the city by evacuees. Truth is Thad Allen, and then President Bush had to ease him into this position and his press conference indicates he is insecure, ego-manical, a power monger, and a jack-ass!
xxx
As I have indicated before, Mayor Nagin is as incompetent a mayor as one can expect from corruption ridden Louisiana. Nagin was clueless in implementing the plan to evacuate New Orleans before Katrina hit, and he is incompetent by issuing re-entry authority into a city without electricity, safe drinking water or emergency medical services, not to mention the bacteria count on the ground. Ooops, the mayor was looking at reports about air-borne bacteria, forget the waterways and sludge.
xxx
Of course the mayor had to take more swipes at Vice-Admiral Thad Allen, someone he should be listening to since competence is what Allen is all about. Yesterday, while indicating he had been out of town, the mayor commented, "Maybe since I've been away a day or two, maybe he's the new crowned federal mayor of New Orleans."
xxx
Nagin also suggested Allen shouldn't be speaking to residents. "As far as I know New Orleans has one mayor, and that's me." Hell Mr. Mayor, pardon the interruption while you were off setting up housekeeping in Dallas, Texas!

Politicians Sell Taxpayers Down The River

Yes, selling us down the Mississippi River to be exact. As a staunch supporter of President Bush I am really disgusted with the knee-jerk reactions of the the politicians from the Fed, State and Local governments in light of the post-Katrina money grab. The Presidents proposal for $200 Billion, for starters, to rebuild a city below sea-level on a river and ocean seems to be irresponsible, if not totally incompetent.
xxx
Compassionate speeches aside, how does the budget for rebuilding get established within a matter of days and where is the paperwork? Mayor Nagin of New Orleans is frothing at the mouth at the thought of his new found riches, so he can have jazz playing in the streets of Bourbon along the French Quarter. Nagin is as incompetent as any politician I have seen in years. At least publicly. This guy wants to supercede any authority of the Federal government while blaming them for his ills. Nagin thinks the taxpayer from East to West, North to South owes his town a giant freeby.
xxx
Louisiana has never faced enough oversight and scrutiny while currently being investigated for misappropriation of $40 million and one of its congressman is investigated by the FBI. This is the tip of the corruption iceberg. Bush promises oversight while relief fund debit cards are already being used for Louis Vuitton handbags, lawyers are lining up to sue the government on behalf of victims, governors from states no where near a hurricane are claiming they are in disaster areas, and the orgy goes on.
xxx
We can no longer believe Republican politicians nor can we trust them as guardians of fiscal responsibility. They have become spend thrifts, worried more about re-elections than deficits, more worried about photo-ops than conservatism. They are following the bozo mayor from New Orleans creating a financially irresponsible call to a bastion of financial corruption known as Louisiana.

Attic Quote of The Day!

On Judge Roberts:

"If they want to vote against him, you know darn well they're captives of these ... very liberal outside groups … and they're demanding they vote against him even though they don't have one good reason to. I really don't believe that's the case but if that happens, then you can see why we're in such a partisan gridlock here in Washington, because the Democrats can't even support someone this good."

Robert's Hearing....Liberal Fraud

John W. Dean III, White House Counsel to President Nixon and one of the architects of the Watergate coverup is on the witness list of Democrats scheduled to appear before Judge Roberts and the Senate Judiciary Committee. Dean opposes the nomination of Judge Roberts.
xxx
As the Wall Street Journal aptly states, "Democrats are using a man who will go down in history for facilitating a Presidential coverup to make the case for open government. Meanwhile, they ignore six Solicitors General from several administrations, Democrat and Republican, who have said publicly that the Roberts documents are covered by attorney-client privilege and should be kept confidential. So: a bipartisan group of law-abiding SGs vs. a convicted felon and Watergate enabler?"
xxx
Hmmm.......More sound Liberal thinking!

Chicago City Council
xxx
Chicago on Wednesday became the nation's largest city to urge the Bush administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq at once. The resolution, approved 29-9, seeks an "immediate and orderly" withdrawal. The City Council has 50 aldermen.
xxx
"Do you think we can make the citizens of Iraq accept democracy by having our troops killed in the roads?" Alderman Bernard Stone said. "We're not supporting our troops by having them killed."
xxx
Alderman James Balcer voted against the resolution, saying he was demoralized by anti-war sentiment while serving as a Marine in Vietnam.
xxx "I know everyone in this council wants our troops home, but I can tell you this (resolution) does not help our troops nor does it help the war on terror," said Balcer, who followed his "no" vote during the roll call with "Semper Fi," the Marine Corps motto.
xxx
We would agree with Mr. Balcer, as these Chicago Liberals should get on with the cities business and avoid eroding the morale of our troops in the armed forces.

Louisiana Dem Use National Guard for Personal Benefit

Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who represents New Orleans and is a senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, was allowed through the military blockades set up around the city to reach the Superdome, where thousands of evacuees had been taken.
Military sources tells ABC News that Jefferson, an eight-term Democratic congressman, asked the National Guard that night to take him on a tour of the flooded portions of his congressional district. A 5-ton military truck and a half dozen military police were dispatched.
Lt. Col. Pete Schneider of the Louisiana National Guard tells ABC News that during the tour; Jefferson asked that the truck take him to his home on Marengo Street, in the affluent uptown neighborhood in his congressional district. According to Schneider, this was not part of Jefferson's initial request. Jefferson defended the expedition, saying he set out to see how residents were coping at the Superdome and in his neighborhood. He also insisted that he did not ask the National Guard to transport him.
"I did not seek the use of military assets to help me get around my city," Jefferson told ABC News. "There was shooting going on. There was sniping going on. They thought I should be escorted by some military guards, both to the convention center, the Superdome and uptown."
The water reached to the third step of Jefferson's house, a military source familiar with the incident told ABC News, and the vehicle pulled up onto Jefferson's front lawn so he wouldn't have to walk in the water. Jefferson went into the house alone, the source says, while the soldiers waited on the porch for about an hour.
The Attic hopes to hear more from the congressman as he justifies the use of military personnel to retrieve property from his home at his impeachment hearings!

New Orleans Mayor Tired of Hearing Helicopters

Here is a fresh quote from the "esteem" mayor of New Orleans, Mr. Nagin. "We gonna rebuild this city, we gonna bring back the culture, we gonna bring back the music, I'm tired of hearing helicopters, I wanna hear jazz!" The Attic can only hope Mayor Nagin was talking about New Orleans and not his new home of Dallas, Texas.

Answering the "Progressives" with LBJ's other Quagmire

Brendan Miniter in "LBJ's other Quagmire" provides an answer to critics and blame artists in Opinion Journal. We've said as much here in the Attic but it's nice to hear it elsewhere.
xx
Miniter begins with Ted Kennedy's quote in the aftermath of Katrina:
xx
"What the American people have seen in this incredible disparity in which those people who had cars and money got out, and those people who were impoverished died."
xx
Mr. Miniter argues:
xx
That debate has so far largely focused on race and class to explain why tens of thousands of poor people were left behind to fend for themselves in a flooding city. Liberals are now blaming small-government conservatism for cutting "antipoverty" programs.
xx
There is, however, another explanation: The welfare state failed the residents of the Lower Ninth Ward and other flooded New Orleans neighborhoods long before the levees gave way. And it also explains the role Mayor Ray Nagin and Gov. Kathleen Blanco--both Democrats--played in leaving mostly poor, minority citizens in a city that was clearly descending into chaos.
xxx
One out of four New Orleans residents was living below the poverty line, and tens of thousands of people were living in public housing. These are the people who were left behind in the flood and who have long been left behind by failing schools, lack of economic opportunity, and crime well above the national average.
xx
It was an extreme example of what the welfare state has done to the poor for decades: use the promise of food, shelter and other necessities to lure most of the poor to a few central points and then leave them stranded and nearly helpless.
xxx
This isn't a failure of President Bush's compassionate conservatism. Nor is it evidence that Ronald Reagan's philosophy of smaller government is fatally flawed. If LBJ had won his war on poverty, Ninth Ward residents would have had the means to drive themselves out of New Orleans. Instead, after decades and billions of tax dollars have been poured into big government programs, one out of four people in the Big Easy were still poor. That is an indictment of the welfare state and all its antipoverty programs.
xxx
Now for the most recent proposal, a 25,000 unit trailer park in Louisiana which will house evacuees up to five (5) years. More good U.S. taxpayer money chasing bad. The cycle continues because the mindset hasn't changed.

Palestinian Mobs
xxx
Palestinian police Tuesday blocked off abandoned Jewish settlements and chased after scavengers in a first attempt to impose order after chaotic celebrations of Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip. The overwhelmed forces were unable to halt looting of the area's prized greenhouses.
xxx
The greenhouses, left behind by Israel as part of a deal brokered by international mediators, are a centerpiece of Palestinian plans for rebuilding Gaza after 38 years of Israeli occupation. The Palestinian Authority hopes the high-tech greenhouses will provide jobs and export income for Gaza's shattered economy.
xxx
"These greenhouses are for the Palestinian people." said Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia. "We don't want anyone to touch or harm anything that can be useful for our people."
xxx
This is how these people celebrate freedom?

Where's The WMD????

The Attic has always believed Saddam Hussein had WMD and we conclude, despite reports, these have been transferred out of country (to Syria) or buried deep in desert sands. Given the opportunity to use any form of weapon of mass destruction the insurgents in Iraq and al-Qaeda would do so. We find the current statement by Iraqi insurgents somewhat telling although it could be simply an idle threat.
xxx
The Associated Press reports:
xxx
Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari flew to Tal Afar on Monday to congratulate his army, and Al-Iraqiya state television said he went despite insurgent threats "to attack the city with chemical and biological weapons."
xx
There was no known public threat from the insurgents to use unconventional weapons in Tal Afar, but militants made two Internet postings in recent days vowing to stage chemical attacks on the Green Zone.
xxx
These terrorists, given the chance, will stop at nothing. Afterall, they willingly kill innocent women, children and elderly while hiding behind masked faces. Anyone who believes al-Qaeda is not attempting access to WMD is wrong. They have the money and they have the will. How much access is yet to be determined but we may find out the hard way, through massive death and destruction.

Senator Landrieu Unhinged!

It seems when Democrats get in over their head on an interview they talk, talk and overtalk. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) is no exception. Chris Wallace, on FoxNews Sunday had to ask Landrieu to let him ask the questions but she couldn't shut up. Landrieu was visibly angry and couldn't take the heat of vigorous questioning.
xxx
Asked about the school buses Nagin did not use to evacuate – the ones for which Nagin had claimed he did not have drivers, Landrieu snapped that those buses were under water. Wallace pointed out that they were not always under water. Landrieu explained that there were two separate events, the hurricane and the flood, and that the buses were under water. Wallace suggested that they could have been used before they became under water, and Landrieu again reminded us that they were under water.
xxx
Wallace pointed out that President Bush has budgeted more money with FEMA than any other President, and Landrieu explained that President Clinton would have done more if he hadn't been saddled with the Reagan deficit. Bush, she argued, has squandered a surplus.
xxx
Landrieu protested that the National Guard had just returned from Iraq and needed a vacation. She declared that "everybody will be held accountable," and that there should be no "finger pointing." Wallace countered by reminding her that she has been one of the largest pointers of fingers.
xxx
At this point Landrieu was thoroughly disgusted, eyes wide and shaking. She stared into the camera and the anger showed through. Instead of solving problems the Dem's play attack dog, their favorite game. They have no plan, never had a plan and couldn't enforce a plan regardless. Democrats lean on taxpayers and big government to solve problems. When people like Senator Landrieu are part of big government one sees why it doesn't work.

Attic Knave of The Day!

Col. Jeff Smith, deputy director of emergency preparedness for the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency's progress on providing temporary housing for the hundreds of thousands of residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
xxx "There should be trailers rolling and things happening that are not happening fast enough. We've asked them to start thinking outside the box and it just hasn't been happening."
xxx
Seems to me, after refusing supplies of food, water and medicine from the Red Cross, Louisiana officials hould start to look inward before slamming the new "whipping boy", FEMA. When does anyone from Louisiana take responsibility for ineptness and incompetence? How fast does Col. Smith believe housing trailers deploy and peripheral setup requirements are put in place?

Ben Stein Makes a Point!

Ben Stein makes solid points while we watch the blame game and politicians unwilling to accept responsibility. Here's his short list.
xx
  1. Why is it that the snipers who shot at emergency rescuers trying to save people in hospitals and shelters are never mentioned except in passing, and Mr. Bush, who is turning over heaven and earth to rescue the victims of the storm, is endlessly vilified?
  2. What church does Rev. Al Sharpton belong to that believes in passing blame and singling out people by race for opprobrium and hate?
  3. What special abilities does the media have for deciding how much blame goes to the federal government as opposed to the city government of New Orleans for the aftereffects of Katrina?
  4. If able-bodied people refuse to obey a mandatory evacuation order for a city, have they not assumed the risk that ill effects will happen to them?
  5. When the city government simply ignores its own sick and hospitalized and elderly people in its evacuation order, is Mr. Bush to blame for that?
  6. Is there any problem in the world that is not Mr. Bush's fault, or have we reverted to a belief in a sort of witchcraft where we credit a mortal man with the ability to create terrifying storms and every other kind of ill wind?
  7. Where did the idea come from that salvation comes from hatred and criticism and mockery instead of love and co-operation?

Attic Quote of The Day!

"September 11 was not so much a discrete event as part of a continuum. It was the result of broad strategic failures that, preceding it by decades, continue to this day and are likely to continue on. It is as if the country has lost, as exemplified by the Left now out of power, a great deal of the will to self-preservation, and, as exemplified by the Right now in charge, not a little of its capacity for self-defense.
xxx
Our politics and policies have somehow been parceled out to opportunists like Michael Moore -- purveyor of conspiracy theories and hatreds, whose presentation, unclean in every respect, is honored nonetheless by the controlling rump of Democrats -- and to Bushmen like "Kip" Hawley of Homeland Security, father of the proposal to allow carry-on ice-picks, bows and arrows, and knives with blades up to five-inches long."

Hey...Looking for a Small Business Loan?

The government's $5 billion effort to help small businesses recover from the Sept. 11 attacks was so loosely managed that it gave low-interest loans to companies that didn't need terrorism relief, or even know they were getting it.
xxx
And while some at New York's Ground Zero couldn't get assistance they desperately sought, companies far removed from the devastation — a South Dakota country radio station, a Virgin Islands perfume shop, a Utah dog boutique and more than 100 Dunkin' Donuts and Subway sandwich shops — had no problem winning the government-guaranteed loans.
xxx Dentists and chiropractors in numerous cities, as well as an Oregon winery that sold trendy pinot noir to New York City restaurants also got assistance.

Attic Knave of The Day!

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, issued an appeal Thursday urging people to sign an online petition to fire the Federal Emergency Management Agency's director over his handling of the Katrina response. OOPS! When recipients clicked on a link to the petition, the top center of the screen, above the call to "Fire the FEMA director", had asked for a donation to the DSCC. We Got Caught! After an inquiry from the Associated Press, the DSCC quickly pulled down the page and said they would give the Red Cross any money raised by the anti-FEMA petition. OH Really? Assessing Governor Blanco....One More Time!

In a report by the Wall Street Journal the Bush administration briefly sought to take control of local law enforcement to quell the violence and get help to victims.
xxx
The administration sent Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco a proposed memorandum of understanding last Friday, raising the possibility that the federal government would take command of the Louisiana National Guard to strengthen law-enforcement efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, according to officials in the Bush administration and the governor's office. In a series of telephone conversations with the White House on Saturday morning, the governor's office refused.
xxx
Gov. Blanco, in a letter to the White House on Saturday morning, said she [Gov.Blanco] would retain control of her state's National Guard troops, and requested the creation a federal joint task force that combined regular military and National Guard units. "Our response was 'no' to federalization, and let's have this instead."
xxx
In a tense meeting with Mr. Bush at the New Orleans airport the same day, Gov. Blanco resisted the idea of federalizing the National Guard. When the president emerged from the meeting, Mr. Bush told New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin that the governor "needed 24 hours to decide," Mr. Nagin said at a later news conference. Ms. Bottcher [Gov. Spokeswoman] agreed that Mr. Bush and Ms. Blanco discussed the federalization of the National Guard.
xxx
Attic Side Note: Governor Blanco is no decision maker but will continue to blame the Fed's for her complete incompetence and failure to act during a major crisis.

Refusing Red Cross Help..Contradiction Scoreboard

UPDATE...UPDATE: I watched an interview with the President/CEO of the American Red Cross and she simply stated they weren't allowed into New Orleans, qualified it was because they would be in the way, and she couldn't understand fully how their aid would be in the way.
xxx
UPDATE: Apparently my blog below is accurate but the Red Cross is in agreement and countering their previous statements. A spokesperson for the Red Cross said they are attempting to get 10,000-15,000 people out of New Orleans by not providing anymore food or water to them. Is this considered humanitarian and why isn't the far-left screaming?
xxx
Original Statements:
xxx
The Red Cross confirmed that it had pre-positioned water, food, blankets and hygiene products for delivery to the Superdome and the Convention Center in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, but were blocked from delivering those supplies by orders of the Louisiana state government, which did not want to attract people to the Superdome and/or Convention Center. xxx The Louisiana State Homeland Security Department had requested that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Their presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.
  • What was the purpose of having evacuees stay at these places without any adequate preparation for basic needs: food, water, shower/bathroom facilities, medical?
  • If officials did not wish to attract people to the Superdome or Convention center why were these facilities opened up for that purpose?
  • What was the plan?
  • When do Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco take responsibility for their failure to ensure the safety of poor residence according to their own written plans?
  • During a crisis what person in their right mind refuse emergency relief?

Mayor Nagin & Governor Blanco...Same Page or Not?

How interesting as I witness separate interviews with New Orleans Mayor, Nagin early in the day and this afternoon Louisiana Governor Blanco. Question: Mayor Nagin, are you authorized to order mandatory evacuation in the city? Answer: Absolutely, the New Orleans police will be in charge of that and it will begin today. Question: Mayor Nagin, what is the main reason for a mandatory evacuation at this point? Answer: Mosquito's are biting dead people and their beginning to fly. Attic Note: We're not sure if the illustrious mayor meant the cadavers were beginning to fly or the mosquito's. Now cutting to the Governor's Interview: Question: Governor Blanco, who has the final say on authorizing mandatory evacuation in New Orleans? Answer: Well that would have to be an executive order by the Governor, that's me of course; I have to sign that when we're sure it's necessary. Question: Governor, what will a decision to have mandatory evacuation of the remaining citizens in New Orleans call for? Answer: Well we have many scientists down here testing the ground and the water to see if we have Louisiana water or something toxic. That will give us an idea if we should require a mandatory evacuation. There you have it, the blind leading the blind. Hey Mike Brown (FEMA Director)...get ready to duck!

Why Were Levy Projects Canceled?

It's interesting to hear and read about the Federal Government not completing projects or not providing enough money for levy repair in and around New Orleans. Repairs should have taken place over time years ago. One sentence tucked away in a Wall Street Journal article brings to surface one area of concern. 'A $600 million lock-replacement project didn't get very far. Lower Ninth Ward residents complained about noise and launched a legal fight that bogged down the work.' (This was in the late 1990's)
