Whom Do You Trust? Google Bargains with the Devil!

Google Inc. (providers of this blog service) launched a Chinese search service, agreeing, after much internal debate, to censor its own search results in order to comply with Beijing's strict limits on access to information.
xxx The site,, is critical to Google's competition with both Western and Chinese rivals, Google executives believe. In designing the service, the Mountain View, Calif., search giant believes it has reached an acceptable balance between compliance with Chinese laws and its corporate mission to make all of the world's information universally accessible.
What is an acceptable balance in the world of competition and capitalism, which this blog supports including a complete free market system. China is setting rules of restriction which support censorship and free markets, not to mention free speech.
In running, Google said, it will remove links to sites believed offensive to the Chinese government, on the understanding the government will then allow Google to use computer servers located in China.
Google says it won't host user-generated content, such as blogs or email, on computer servers in China, at least for now. Such materials can be vulnerable to seizure by the government when located on servers there. Google also plans to alert Chinese users to censored materials by placing a short notice at the bottom of the search-results page. It is unclear whether the Chinese government will tolerate such notification.
In a statement, Google Senior Policy Counsel Andrew McLaughlin said: "While removing search results is inconsistent with Google's mission, providing no information (or a heavily degraded user experience that amounts to no information) is more inconsistent with our mission."
Spoken like a lawyer, out both sides of his mouth! Under the guise of competition Google is getting in the proverbial bed of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. Did we forget Chairman Mao?
At the same time the U.S. Government is requesting Google to hand over millions of search records - [Gonzalez v. Google] a request that Google is adamantly refusing - they are jumping in bed with a country that subjugates free speech. We agree with Googles fight against the U.S. Government at the same time we're at odds with their alliance with China. AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! received identical subpoenas and chose to comply with them rather than fight the request in court. Shame on them!
The Bush administration's request, first reported by The San Jose Mercury News, is part of its attempts to defend the 1998 Child Online Protection Act (Copa), which is being challenged in court in Philadelphia by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). ACLU said websites cannot realistically comply with Copa and that the law violates the right to freedom of speech mandated by the First Amendment. To an extent we must admit to agreeing with the left-wing ACLU, probably a first.
Enforcing laws does not require condoning censorship. In both cases the governments are infringing on individual rights. Google can't seem to make up it's mind where they stand, as long as it takes care of the bottom line.
