Acquiring Democracy is Not A Drive-Thru Window Experience

We American's love instant gratification, speed of light email, instant messaging, fast cars and fast food. The fact is, we earned it as a community. If the world snivels at our life-style they should further examine our purpose.

Andrew at What's Really Wrong With America? feels our spending habits our wrong. He questions if Bill Gates is running the country. No Andrew, he isn't but the innovations of Microsoft have made the world a better place. There is resentment because Andrew believes the ambitiious run America. And what is wrong with that, does he prefer al Qaeda?

Andrew feels education and ambition are separate entities, not able to work together. He equates ambition with greed. Like an insecure Liberal, Andrew proclaims, "Most people in America try to remedy their fears and insecurities by habitually spending every dime they get. I am no different. I catch myself sometimes gazing at someone sitting at a stop light in a brand new range rover and I feel like I need one. I really do want one! Maybe I'll reach a pinnacle of success at that point? Maybe someone will be looking at me at a stop light? Then I can buy a $2,000 Armani suit with sparkling cufflinks... Every woman will want me, and all the guys will want to be like me." Is this generalization what American really constitutes? I think not.

American's are a giving nation. We have few bounds in our pursuit of helping the world. Earthquate assistance, Tsunami relief, AIDS foundations and programs within our borders for education, medical help, housing and the ability to get what you want through sweat equity. If don't rise to the top we keep trying because we are American's.

The war in Iraq, aka, the war on terrorism is not going swimmingly as depicted on the evening news, 24-hour cable, the N.Y. Times and Washington Post et al. There are many speed bumps to the rode to peace and if anyone thinks this is easy they should wake up to the realities of war and the ilk we are fighting in the Middle East.

Who are the bleeding hearts who spend so much time criticizing America because we have wealth and sympathizing with prisoners and flushed Korans at Guantanamo Bay, illicit pictures at Abu Grabib, the embalming of Uday and Qusay, the demeaning oral exam of Saddam? We complain about George Bush and point fingers yet we are slow to recognize the achievements of our soldiers in harms way. We see death and burning buildings in Bahgdad but fail to remember the smoldering embers at New York's ground zero.

American's who criticize America fail to recognize achievments in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Ukraine and Egypt. Critics don't report on the positive, which is the trickle down effect of America's courage to take on the big issues and confront the enemy on their turf. Kofi Annan has a human rights commission filled with human rights abusers while criticizing America at every opportunity because he dislikes a detention center he or his colleagues have never visited.

The military leaders stay focused on the war against terror, the Liberals stay focused on creating controversy and negativism. Opinions are one of our rights, mistating facts is irresponsible. Leadership is having a plan, not standing before the cameras calling the President a liar.

It's easy to criticize the have's by crying over the have not's. The sales trainer Tom Hopkins used the acronym GOYA to demonstrate how to achieve personal victory and get the Armani suit or simply food on your table. He proclaimed one must "Get Off Your Ass!" Our military has this message residing in their intestinal fortitude, their ability to see a job through. Many American's like Andrew see their glass completely empty.

Small business people see GOYA in their successes, which transcend to success for the American economy. America is a melting pot of ideas, innovation, creative thought, diversity in thinking and it's people. Ronald Reagan said, "Entrepreneurs and their small enterprises are responsible for almost all the economic growth in the United States."

We are a nation of things and people. What came first, the chicken or the egg? People came first, they became American's, they achieved and continue to achieve. We are winners, we are optimists, we are pessimists, in the end we are the sum of our parts but we're not losers. Our successes are the result of optimism.

President Reagan said it best. "And how stands the city on this winter night? More prosperous, more secure, and happier than it was eight years ago. But more than that; after 200 years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true on the granite ridge, and her glow has held steady no matter what storm. And she's still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom, for all the pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling through the darkness, toward home."

Mr. Reagan's words were true on January 11, 1989 and they stand true today. We are also a hope for prosperity. We are often resented as a people, as a nation. Many times the same people who resent us attempt to emulate our ideals.
