Condi's Next Move??

Paul Tagliabue is retiring as NFL commissioner in July after more than 16 years on the job.The 65-year-old commissioner has led the league since 1989, when he succeeded Pete Rozelle, and agreed last March to stay to complete the television and labor deals. xxx He finally got that done 12 days ago, finishing the most arduous labor negotiations since the league and union agreed on a free agency-salary cap deal in 1992. "I believe that now is a positive time to make the transition to a new commissioner," Tagliabue said in a statement. xxx Roger Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer, and Atlanta general manager Rich McKay are the two leading candidates to succeed Tagliabue. Baltimore Ravens president Dick Cass is considered a dark horse. ccc What about Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice? Here is what Dr. Rice said in an interview with Mike Freeman in April 2002 when asked about being NFL Commissioner. xxx "That's absolutely right," she said, "though not immediately and not before Paul Tagliabue is ready to step down. I want to say that for the record." xxx "I think it would be a very interesting job because I actually think football, with all due respect to baseball, is a kind of national pastime that brings people together across social lines, across racial lines. And I think it's an important American institution." xxx "I really consider myself a student of the game," she said. "I find the strategy and tactics absolutely fascinating. I find the evolution of the game really interesting. Again, as it relates to military history. Military history has swung back and forth between advantage to the offense and advantage to the defense. When the offense has the advantage, then a new technology will come along that will temporarily give the defense the advantage and vice versa. Football has that kind of pattern, too." xxx Dr. Rice has said on more than one occasion NFL Commissioner would be her "dream job."
