Nuclear Threats - Diplomacy Shell Game

How far will diplomacy carry the United States and diminish threats from Iran? The Mullahs have effectively made a mockery of talks with Great Britain, France, and Germany while refusing Russian recommendations of help with off site enrichment to calm the fears of the West.

The U.N. Security Council is useless as China and Russia refuse to use sanctions against Iran to force the issue of producing warheads, as the Iranian president openly threatens Israel and the United States.

Well respected expert on armaments and foreign policy, Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) believes direct talks with the mullah's "would be useful" and the Bush Administration should "make more headway diplomatically." How this could be is a mystery, as Iran plays the talk game to its advantage while they have successfully mastered uranium enrichment.

The tough part is over; producing nuclear bombs is the easy part. Iran has successfully completed the most difficult task to joining the nuclear club while the West watches, the IAEA was bludgeoned, and diplomacy was as a delay tactic. Senator Lugar doesn't provide a plan of discussions with rulers who openly discuss U.S. destruction.

There must be a genuine willingness of all parties before meaningful dialogue can take place. The Paris Peace Accords were in the "planning" stages for five years, Vietnam continues under Communist rule today. What was accomplished?

The Clinton administration attempted appeasement with North Korea in the 1990's, when Pyongyang was offered economic and technical assistance in exchange for promising to give up its nuclear ambitions. North Korea pocketed the American commitment, went ahead covertly with its weapons programs, and is now demanding further U.S. concessions.

On November 1, 1979 Iran's new leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini urged his people to demonstrate against United States and Israeli interests. Ruhollah Khomeini was anti-American in his rhetoric, denouncing the American government as the "Great Satan" and "Enemies of Islam".

Nothing Iran has done in recent years offers any indication it would honor such a bargain. It has consistently lied to the IAEA, trashed its agreements with Europe, openly flouted a U.N. Security Council resolution, provided explosives to insurgents in Iraq, developed ballistic missiles of increasing range, selected a president with apocalyptic religious impulses, and engaged in vitriolic anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
This is not the behavior of an ordinary state -- a "status quo power," in diplomatic jargon -- that aims to "normalize" its position in the world through diplomacy. Rather, they are the acts of a revolutionary regime seeking to spread its ideology and power by force and intimidation.

The "Clear and Present Danger" is not a Hollywood script starring Harrison Ford but a real life threat starring the radical Mullahs and insane president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who claims, "the Iranian Army was a harbinger of peace and security and not a threat to any country." However, this soft comment comes after claiming Israel is a "permanent threat" to the Middle East that will "soon" be liberated. "Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation. The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm." xxx
It should be noted Ahmadinejad is a believer of the "Hidden Imam" and as such, believes that he can actually push the world closer to the last battle in order to bring the messiah back sooner. This type of radical thinking must be addressed in the harshest terms. One nuclear hit could wipe out Israel and devastate a major U.S. city. Diplomacy only works for the extremists, bent on destruction of the West and wishes to annihilate their perceived enemies.
